Telltale Lights

Hi Guys,

On Saturday these 3 lights came on at the same time while I was driving. When I arrived at my destination and switched off for the evening, the next day the lights did switch on in the morning. On my way back, the lights came on again.

After some googling, lots of guys says it is the speed sensor. How would I test each sensor as I understand that there are 1 per wheel?

Then I ran a diag on rheingold and it came up with Steering angle implausible. Which one should I start with?

Thanks in advance

OP, it is more the steering angle sensor that is the problem. Looks like you have the software Rheinsgold, did you try the steering angle sensor reset?

I know this is for the E90 but cleaning the disc on the sensor worked for me when I had this problem, maybe look into this.

Will give it a go, I did not reset the lights or clear any fault codes intentionally for the sake of the pics.

When my e46 gave that error my steering wheel was out of alignment and felt weird etc had a look under and my control arm was broken had the control arm replaced and new control arm bush.. My front shock was worn which I think caused the control arm to break replaced front shocks the next week.

OP... get your wheel alignment set and while on the alignment machine then re-initialize the steering wheel sensor.

if that doesn't sort your issue out then move onto the wheel speed sensors and clean them out.

In rheingold while you press the calculate test plan you will see it is going to ask you to go full left and then full right. If it accepts the full left and right ° then the lights will go out on the first 100m of driving. You must drive to the gate, it will not reset properly if this isnt done.

For the sad part - While going full left and full right you will notice it goes in ° degrees of 0 to 180/360, note this as you do it for both directions. In my case I had a problem going left where it will go to 150° and then it will disappear the reading that is, and then return giving an error. In this case it was the disc behind the steering wheel in which the steering angle sensor is sitting. The disc had some dirt on it, like you will find on your tv set if left for 2 weeks. I cleaned it with alcohol and put the steering back, did the reset / calibration and boom the problem was gone.

Also check if you go straight that the car does go straight, plus the steering wheel can't be more than 5° out from dead center. The car will make calculations based on the angle the steering wheel is, nobody in their right mind will do 100km/h at a constant angle of say 10° as you will end up in a ditch ....... hope this explains the cars calculations issue.

Hi

What would I need to read my own codes & cost of the whole setup?

The iCarsoft range of scanners have caught my attention. And they give quite detailed descriptions of the faults and fault codes.

There are 2 models for BMW available.

The i910 and BM II.

Go have a look on YouTube for reviews. They look very handy to have.

UPDATE:
My steering was not straight after Mintys did me alignments 18 months ago (just never go to taking it back)

So after reading the error, I decided to do the alignment at Tiger Wheels and clear the codes, been driving now for 3 days and no issues - with a straight steering :) . hope its sorted for good.
