Take a drive with the F30 328i

So wildlife (buck) demoted me from 335 to 328.
The new car

So first thing is run the car in a bit and my normal route as with many others tested before.We leave Vereeniging on full tank and the road is a 100km/h one.Set the gearbox to eco-pro and speed control to 105km/h.
The road has been patched up quite well since elections and the only hassle is the number of 30 ton trucks you have to brake for and overtake.Get to the Fochville 4way stop and this is our journey meter;

We have travelled 33km at an ave. of 100km/h and fuel usage stands at 5.7litres/100km.
The road from here starts to descend to Potchefstroom (1350mts) and we get there with this info;

Distance 67km at average speed of 99.7km/h fuel usage 5.5l/100km.

We go through town,all twelve traffic lights,and the stop/start function has to work overtime.Last traffic light on the way to Klerksdorp and we see;

All the stops have taken their toll on the average speed

Distance 81km average 91.2 fuelusage 5.6l/100km.

The next 10km is past location and a strictly enforced 80km/h is enforced so speedocruise set at 85km/h.
After that for the first time we can now set to 125km/h till Stilfontein.
Road now becomes 100km/h again till in Klerksdorp and we see;

Distance

Even after having been able to do a decent speed for the last 20km the 10km stretch having to do 80 and the Potch stop/start have taken chunks out of the average speed.
We now see;
Distance 127km average 87.3 and fuel usage 5.7l/100km.

We carry on through the suburbs and these traffic lights that seem to be red forever.Once again the stop/start is invaluabe here.We stop at destination altitude 1230m.

Distance 137km average speed 84.8 and fuel usage 5.8l/100.Range after this distance still shows 856km to go.

We head back later and back in Potchefstroom we see;

A distance of 184.9km covered and the fuel gauge still shows full. Climbing back up in altitude fuel usage stands at 6.0 litres/100km.
We drive up to Fochville crossing and at this point after 230km the fuel gauge for the first time is slightly under the full mark.

We get back to Vereeniging

Total distance 274km at average of 84.7km/h usage 6.0litres/100km and a range still ti go of 770km.The fuel gauge 2 stripes below full.
Thanks for the journey and can i now give some impressions.

The F30 328i is very quiet inside and sounds like the F30 Hybrid did when on electric motor.The handling is the same as 335i but somehow feels better balanced.It is 75kg lighter but seems to sream out" take me to the circuit".
The 8 speed auto remains a jewel just a pity no paddles on the steering.
The biggest save comes when going through town in Potch.On this car usage went up only 0.1l/100 compared to the 335 that went up 0.6l/100.

Guys this is not a "my dogs bigger than yours".This car was set eco-pro with speed control so its all car and not me.Anyone driving this stretch as a law abiding citizen sticking to prescribed limits will achieve these figures.
These cars driven like this one will easily do 1000km on a tank.

My performance logs will follow at a later date but so far i am impressed with BMW's 4cylinder 180kw motor. :thumbs:

Damn that didn't take long!!! So what happened to "I'm keeping the 335 for a while"

Wish I could have swapped out the exhaust box, just to have the tips on my car. :rollsmile:

I'm a bit surprised you went for the 19" wheels after our chat last week.

Good luck with the car!!

What can i say.I thought the damage from the buck did not look all that bad but when they put it on the lift xenon headlight broken with all brackets and everything behind the bumper.R40000.
I asked my dealer what he had to trade for my car as is and that is what was on the floor.
The F30 328i came out with those wheels (19").
I would have liked to have taken a 335 again but would have had to pay in.
I must say i am pleasantly supprised with this car and remember i still have the M135i if in a naughty mood.

That's better than my 530d :slow:
2litre plus 8speed plus lighter probably not so surprised. :biglol:
F30 320d still remains the champ by far on economy and it was a toss up for me between the F30 328i and the F30 320d.

You change cars quite often :fencelook:

Ive always been curious to know how the N20 performs. Congrats :thumbs:
Mishaps happen unfortunately that forced this change otherwise i would have kept the 335 much longer.I actually planned on keeping the 335 till the new M3 became available at decent listed price.
On the positive it now gives me a chance to evaluate this new model and after this long trip i must say i may have underestimated this model.

Ouch .., Thats hectic Joe.

If i understand correctly the dealer traded the accident damaged 335i for a brand new 328i, or was this after the insurance repaired the vehicle that it was traded?

Lovely review, this car is so incredibly economical for the power it delivers, my word. I think a Performance exhaust may be in order :fencelook:

Look forward to the logs Sir! :praise:

Nice review...

"you're making me look bad here" I've achieved those figures once
Not bad if you achieved it with the 2013 model.Remember the 2014 model is slightly different and importantly has the coasting function that in this trip added 24km to the range.

You understand correctly.Traded as is they must fix themselves.

then the 'downgrade' makes sense, even though i would not consider it a downgrade.

Seems like the accident was on of those minor cosmetic bumps that end up costing alot.

Upside is that you have another car to datalog for us figure happy people....

That's very good consumption! Your F30 335i was the Active Hybrid wasn't it?
The figure listed was for the normal F30 335i.I used that because it was lighter than the hybrid on the open road and the Hybrid became the car to use in town.
