Switching from 5W-30 to 0W-40?

So I've been chatting to a few forum members and been doing some research, and it seems like the best oil available is Mobil 1 0W-40?

I'm currently running on castrol magnatec 5W-30 , will I be able to switch to the 0W-40? Will there be any problems etc?

I've read that some guys say your engine gets used to the oil you are running, and switching might not be a good idea?

Any advice would be much appreciated!!

Thx Guys

What car? Mobil 1 0W40 is overkill for 99% of cars and not a good idea. Why do you want to change?

E39 528i Auto - Just want the best possible oil the maximize the lifespan of the motor.

You recon its best to stay with the 5W-30?:slow:

If there is no reason to change the type of oil then don't. If the car is using allot of oil or it is leaking out everywhere then sure it might be a good idea to change to something else. In your case I think the Mobil1 will shorten the life of the engine since it is not intended for your car and it is extremely thin.

What is the mileage on the car? If you want to prolong the life do regular changes like every 12 500km, rather change the frequency than the oil itself.

Got about 373k on now. Just have a small leak on the VCG but replacing that soon. I've been on both castrol and Mobil 1 websites, and both recommend 0W-40?

I have also checked in the booklet of the car, states that you can use 0W-40.

Also spoken to a few mechanics, they recon Mobil 1 is way better oil, and has much better "anti-wear" properties than castrol oils.

BUT what I do not know, is what affect changing the oil will have on the motor?:fencelook:

At that mileage I would stick to what is in the car and keep using the same. The websites that recommend oil for particular cars don't take mileage into account. If your car was new I would say sure you CAN use 0W40 but if it were my car and I would not use 0W40. Yes Mobil1 makes extremely high performance oils, the 0w40 being one of them. Is your M52B28 in need of such high performance oil, I think not.

at operating temp 0w40 is thicker than 5w30 :fencelook:

Mobil 1 is the best oil no question... but have you priced it yet?

rather avoid starting another oil fight and go to the site 'bob the oil guy' all the info you need is there

If you're concerned about the life of your engine, rather just change the oil more regularly (every 10 000km) and make sure its not leaking. I would do this rather than try and buy some super expensive oil (mobil1) and hope it will add extra life..

I've seen 7 cars change from other oils to Mobil 1 0W40 with no problems, mine included. Cars include a 2002 C270 CDI, two 2003 Mk4 Jetta 1.9 TDI's, a 2012 C250 CDI Coupe, a 2007 Audi A4 2.0 TDI, a 2006 Polo 1.9 TDI Sportline, and my 2002 E39 530d.

All diesels though. Dunno about petrols. But you never know what the previous owner used most of the time (assuming it's second hand), and if the book recommends it, why not?

The only issue is the price. But you don't pay for a Merc and get a Tata, if you know what I mean...

Update:

So after A LOT of researching I've decided to rather stick with the 5w30 that i'm using now. Mobil 1 is the best oil but due to the mileage on the vehicle everyone suggests rather sticking with 5w30.

Will be doing the oil service tomorrow as well as renewing final drive fluid.

Only read trough the oil threads now and saw "the war", so I'd rather stay out of that one:fencelook:

Thanks for all the advice!

BMW did suggest a bit thicker oil though due to the clearances of the valves and bearings that will be a bit bigger after the mileage, but lets leave it there!

Thx for the advice buddy!

I changed to mobil 1 from shell Helix and getting a bit of sweating around the turbo - but that could be due to the morons filling in a bit too much ......the car (320d) is chipped with a downpipe and modded exhaust.
