yup, had this happening to my 2005 330i (e90) this morning. yellow steering wheel and lock. car not starting either.

tried rocking the steering wheel, it's not moving. also tried rocking the car, car is rolling, but didn't help.

dealer can't check it on site, have to have it towed in by third party.

disconnected the battery now, leaving it for an hour, will see what's up thereafter. I'm hoping it gets sorted.

had the battery neg. pole disconnected for an hour and a few minutes, reconnected, problem still there.

Well, it seems a software reset didn't do the job either, apparently a module on the steering column was faulty, replaced steering column. My wallet is feeling a little raped at the moment, although Donford did give me some discount, what a nice bunch!

Got the steering wheel with two arrows yellow warning light and car will not start. Is it necessary to replace the CAS and the steering column?
BMW wants 12K?
any advice??

Get someone with a cable and do the following:

If you have completed this DIY (thanks yakev724) and still get that pesky yellow warning light, I found a way to clear it (credits to Micha from the German e60-forum.de). Apparently the ELV has an internal counter that causes the yellow (and red?) warning light to display. This counter can be reset using EDIABAS ToolSet32. The count is stored in the CAS and needs to be cleared in CAS and ELV. Load CAS.prg in ToolSet32 and run the commands "steuern_elvcounter_cas_loeschen" and "steuern_elvcounter_elv_loeschen".
This procedure may even unlock the locked steering column with red warning light, but I haven't had the red light since I performed the DIY. I'm assuming this because after my steering column was locked and I had towed my car to an indy shop, the mechanic was able to unlock it by "resetting" something.

BTW, this counter reset worked for me, but as with any advice you find on the Internet, you do this at your own risk. Bonjour ;-)

Just the reset part for now, Then make sure your battery is 100% if it is and the error doesn't come back then all good, If it does then follow the DIY in the link above.

Update... BMW replaced CAS as they couldn't connect to the car, 5.5k later, tried reprogramming the new CAS, they said I have to replace Steering column first for a further 14k. Got a second opinion from another dealer and they said its a BS story. I demanded my car back in the condition I dropped it off and miraculously they manged to do the software update on the new CAS and the fault was gone.

Three weeks later, steering with arrows showed up again. So clearly, the CAS didn't need to be replaced! I was only able to start the car by turning the steering full to the left, you hear the ELV lock and then unlock then it starts.

This weekend I followed the DIY removed steering col, opened out ELV module. Most of the moving parts were quite smooth, but I noticed the worm shaft end was a bit gritty, so sprayed some WD40, applied a but if grease and it felt smooth. Connected sterring col. and it locks and unlocks, tried it over 10 times.
Put it all together, took the car for a drive, when i parked I released the fob and it didn't lock, the error came back!!

Ther icon I get is not the same as many others with steering and lock, the icon I get is the steering and arrows. So I don't know if it is maybe something else??

I read up on the SZL but I don't get the DTC fault or the triangle with half circle icon??

Next I will check if a new battery will fix, otherwise I will get the emulator from Italy.

Where can I buy the cable from and what software should I download?

I think you are chasing the wrong issue, I think that could actually be a faulty steering wheel position sensor but I haven't had that issue before so I don't know if that is the symbol for it.

hows it twin cam,

i had the same problem with my 07 320d,

i sent it in and they told me that it was an issue with the electronic steering lock.
in addition to this the okes from Bavaria had a recall article out on this particular problem with the E90s.
i had to change the column :skit: at a price of R2500.00 from Mark at MD house, it was a post face lift unit as those units had the problem solved, after installing the item we still had an issue with the car not starting and after many days at Burma beemer (not happy with them). they came up with a problem on the CAS unit :skit: :skit: :skit:

they say that was on the blink and needed to be replaced it is a coded part so not as easy as plug and play.
i have since pulled the car from BMW purely because i was stuffed about for week and have it with The partners workshop in wynburg they are sorting out the problem getting the unit and the coding done, :cartel: .

don't even bother with the extended warranty clowns either i am with innovations group and my claim was rejected right out because they have worded their terms and conditions so well that they can promise you the world and help you with sweet nothing when you claim... what a bunch of :bin:

anyways the point of my story is that you can have 1 of many problems with it and it will be best to try an independent because the dealers will try rip you for every spare cent you have if they do the job. PS. they will try and tell you that you need to replace one with the other at a lovely 22k, that is not the case at all

give the boys at TPW a call speak to peter 011-440-5406

have a lekkah day guys.

I had an issue on my car last night playing with Abrites. Turns out I just needed to clear the ELV counter. Maybe you lucky and that's it?

If you don't mind coming to Benoni, I can have a look for you.

update...

Howsit guys, thanks for the posts.
it's been more than a week now and i haven't tried anything new, and the error hasn't come up again. i can hear the steering lock working very smoothly, so the DIY seems to have done the job. As per the DIY post, it acted up soon after doing the DIY, but it resets or something after a day and the error is gone.

so if you experience a similar problem, i suggest that you don't replace the CAS or the steering column (as the dealer would ask you to do) until you try the DIY fix first.
