Steering Rack

Hi guys,

I took my 320D to the dealership today to quote on a slight vibration on my front tyres. After the diagnostics were done, I was told that the steering rack and right wheel drum needs to be replaced. Total cost is R48k. Apparently the steering rack is over R25k alone. 

Does anyone know where I can get a 2nd hand one and is it advisable to use 2nd hand steering rack?

Google companies that refurbish steering racks and get a quote from them. Also, your car does not have a brake drums any more, only discs and pads. I would bet that your problem is either a suspension bush or joint or even out of round tires. I would start with the tires if i were you and have them balanced. While they are being balanced have a look and see if they are not out of round (outer circumference of the tire) and going up and down on the machine. If they do then ask the guys to loosen the tire on the rim and move it about 180 degrees on the rim and balance again. Check again for out of roundness. Brake discs usually vibrate when you start braking and should not give vibrations when not in use. Keep in mind that your car's suspension is designed to accept a small amount of vibrations caused by tires and brake discs but as soon as the suspension starts to wear the vibrations will be aggrevated and felt through the steering wheel. A good test will be to swop the front and rear wheels (left front with left rear and right front with right rear) and go for a drive and see if there is any difference. If there is no vibration then it is the tires and or tire/rim combination. When changing the wheels please clean around the centre of the wheel where it sits on the disc and put a little copper grease on the tapered part of the centre of the rim for ease of removal later. Do not get grease on the tapered part of the wheel nuts as this will lead to over tightening of the nuts.

ZF rack? I was sent to Bosch and was informally quoted 12 thousand to recon it. Mine is leaking. Bosch owns ZF racks so ZF people here tell me.

But Bosch is useless, I approached them twice and twice they asked for my contact details and twice didnt do what they said they would do.

Whats the exact fault of the steering rack? If it just the steering rack making the knocking noise, the kit to refurb the main mount is R430 with ABM discount. 

Try that first unless your rack is leaking all over and basically making your car wobble across lanes which sounds like it is not doing right now.

I did hit a pot hole, i cracked my front left rim  which i had to replace. my shocks also had to the replaced with Bilsteins. Then i noticed that when i go over a speed bump there is a very slight knock in he right front but this i can live with. However my steering has a slight wobble on it and I can feel a slight vibration on the front wheels between 65 to 85 km/h. I took it to the dealership, i have attached the quote in case you need to see what the parts are. I have no clue when it comes to these parts.
