Start / Ignition Problem

Ok, so i have been having problems with my ignition switch on my E36 328. When i turn the key all the lights comes ON, but the engine does not start. Now the guy i bought the car from already made some funny contraption by removing the ignition barrel and having some other form of key switch, hopefully all the wiring colours are still standard and someone with ignition experience could help me with the colour codes on fixing the prob.

So i removed the new "barrel", which was taped up badly and immediately 3 connectors that were supposed to be connected somewhere jumps out and i have no idea where to connect it too. I tried to connect it to random points, haha, but no luck, as usual, once again destiny is trying to show me that i am not destined to ride a E36 and should stick to bikes :(

Can someone please look at my diagram and offer me some sort of assistance. I have 3 wires, which are numbered in the picture and i dont have the faintest idea where it should be connected too.
1.)White
2.)Red
3.)Red and Green

1.) and 2.) above are together in a piece of plastic tubing, so i assume that they are joined somewhere together, if that helps. Whoever helps me shall have acquired 1000 points in my IOU program :)

Ok, the white and red cable labelled No. 1 and 2 respectively comes from a 12v relay, which is in the picture seen on the top left and in pic at the bottom, so all i need to figure out is what uses a 12v relay in this picture, and then where does no.3 go too, anyone?

As you can see i am completely lost here, where is a electrician when you need one?
I updated the pic, as i added in the labels in RED, to be more helpful.

Any help would really be appreciated, even a name of a good mechanic to assist me, thanks.

Please search for s///mon's start button thread. It will help you.

Sent from my GT-I9100 using a de-tuned F1 engine with a skimmed dmf and lightly oiled performance filter running Tapatalk engine management.

Will pull covers off in the morning and check the standard colours on the back of the ignition switch .

Sorry Freerider, i had a look at it, but it doesnt help, it could be due to me not having any electrical experience.

Anyway i have uploaded the fuse pic which identifies the white(30) and red(85) cables, does this make sense to any1. I found that my central locking doesnt work, so i can only assume the red & green cable(No.3) was used for that somehow.

I checked my e36 1996 model and here is a pic of the plug at the back of the ignition switch .

There are five wires and I measured voltages like this :
Off Radio on Ignition on Start
Black /yellow 0 0 0 13
Red/Green 13 13 13 13
Green/Grey 13 0 0 0
Red/ 13 13 13 13
Green/Brown 0 0 13 13

Sorry the first column is Off , Second is Radio on and so forth .

Here is the bottom after the two grub screws were removed :

Hope this helps .
Good luck

Thanks Ray, yes i think u you just helped me.
Black & Yellow - could be starter
Red & Green - battery
My battery kinda ran flat so couldnt do much testing, will wait till 2moro when it is fully charged. I will try to make a detailled thread to assist any1 else in the future, if i get it right

Sandman are you just wanting to start the car or replace this generic switch with a e36 switch again ?
Ok the large red one has power all the time .The black yellow only has power when cranking the motor , must be starter .
The relay is normally used to carry a heavy current when it is switched by a small current , you have a light switch activating a relay so the contacts in the light switch dont burn out as they would if handling say 20 amps instead of say 1/4 amp .
I see you have different coloured wires . .
Good luck .

There is nothing wrong with my existing switch, only that the wires came loose from its terminals. I do eventually want to create a start button, so understanding where everything is coming from would be a requirement. At the moment my car isnt starting so just getting that right would be good.

It worked !!! I charged the battery an installed it and BOOOM engine started. I think when i initially opened the unit, the red cable situated on the "batt" terminal was slightly off, which i reconnected, but somehow the battery must've run down.
The 3 unknown cables is still off the starter unit, but must be part of the door locking mechanism which doesnt work, but its not important to me as its a track car.
Raybimmer = 1000 points :praise:
So, the pic looks exactly the same.

For a track car you can later take the lighter out and put a start switch there with a toggle switch for ignition on and off .
