If a compression test is done on a warm engine and the values written down you can look at the variation between cylider values and the readings themselves . Eg if cyl 2 is 800 and cyl 3 is 1050 and cyl 4 is 700 then there is a problem . but also if all should be 1050 and they are say 700 then all rings or bores or valve guides are worn . If you now drop a teaspoon of oil into each pleghole and redo the comp test and you get higher readings then the oil has sealed the bores -rings or bore wear is the problem . If the wet test values do not climb then the head is the culprit - burn valve , seat damage or worn guide ( valve not on seat in same place each time ) .
Good luck .

In my case it sounds like the problem is top and bottom. Head is already off and at expert, given the valve issues. Compression test readings were all over the show, varying between each of the cylinders. Wet compression tests revealed that something is off on the bottom end. Sump still needs to be dropped and bottom end taken apart, but he's first waiting for head to come back.

Back on the road since the beginning of June. Biggest problem was the head, especially the valve guides. Rings and bearings were also done. Still running in, but purring like a kitten now. :)
