Hi guys. I just bought my first bmw e90 320i 2007. I noticed a little smoke when it idled for a few min and i reved. I took it back to the garage and the garage mechanic started stripping the car saying that he suspects it could be the oil rings?he did replace the oil separator first and it is still doing the same. Any advice please?

Valve stem seals, if your mech is any good.... ask him to have a look at that. That is a common issue on those engines.

All the best with the repairs

After how many kms do you think they would become an issue?

Thanks b3rg. I suggested that to my dealer but he is adamant that they wana change rings as well because they wana make sure that the car is 100 per cent when they give it back to me.what are ur thoughts on that?

if you're not paying..sure..

if you search you will see a few discussions on this topic for that engine. its a common issue that people have resolved before.

Thanks sir, I wont be paying a cent, they will do it at their own cost to company. was just a bit sceptical on opening the engine at such an early stage. this vehicle has got 95000km on the clock and full service history with Auto Umhlanga. So I can rest assured that the vehicle will be good as new???

 hey guys its me again. I got my car back from the dealer in November last year after they overhauled the whole motor. It was running beautifully and had good power! however, last week while on my way to pmb, down a steep hill I did not use my accelerator, it was still in gear but took my foot of the pedal. it rolled for about a kilometre or 2,then as I accelerated there was a puff of smoke at the rear!! whilst driving normally there is no smoke at all, only after a bit when I don't accelerate. Really worried, please help with info? 1 of the mechs suggested oil separator??

I agree - generally valve stem seals. Poor quality oil or even oil that the motor doesn't necessarily work well with, will cause this too.

1000kms after one of my oil changes I thought I had internal issues. I put LM 5W30 which it a common use for the ///M cars but my 550i hated it. In the first 1000kms I consumed about 1L oil and the clouds of oil smoke were frightening. I went back to my faithful Castrol Edge Sport 10W60 and my baby was purring and smokeless. My personal view is that the oil coolers on the ///M's are much larger and can handle the heat better whereas my car isn't designed for that oil rating. I've been using this oil on all my cars for the last 10 years plus and have never been disappointed. People throw out claims of sludge build up but I am yet to see any evidence of it on my cars.

Car may take a little longer to get up to the correct oil temp, but worth it for me.

Thanks for that sir. I was thinking could it not be the oil separator by any chance since the motor was done and new valve stem seals?
