Slipring replacement

I took delivery of my new daily driver baby. E39 528 Manual. Used to be my pop’s car. The only major thing was that the multi function steering wheel did not work (No horn, radio controls or cruise control).

Went to my local second-handy and got a new slipring. Removed airbag and steering wheel and to my utter frustration found that the supplied bit was the wrong one. Now I live in Kempton and these guys are in Pretoria West.

The only thing left to do was to try this myself. Disassembled the entire thing and rolled out the whole length of ribbon. It was cleanly split close to the inside end. Just as a precursor, I was borne with 2 left hands.
I split the seven strands on each side and then melted the plastic covering off each of the bits individually. Then proceeded to link them one by one, rolling the flat bits onto each other. Then they needed some heating and a good squeeze to create a bind. A good measure of some insulation tape on each single strand, and viola!!

Looks like the older electronics are quite a bit more forgiving than the new bits as it now works great.

PS: On refitting you have to roll up the ring till tight and then relax 2.5 to 3 turns.

Sounds like a repair I did to fix my toyota's horn ring way back when. Only this is version 2.0 with an upgrade. Nice job Leon!

Have you some pictures?

Hi Leonard

I am testing the new FSR lunch time. Ran into a spate of trouble with the cars clutch completely disintegrating on Sunday evening.

I have contacts for clutches I discovered while doing mine, I got that 240mm clutch+pressure+thrust and pilot for 2k, and it was Luk.

Thanks, I already dropped the new one in. Paid R1 520 for a new Sachs power clutch kit(Also had the Clutch,+Preasure+Thrust bearing).

Thanks though

Leon,

Wanted to ask, did you feel a differance in the car after resetting adaption settings ?

Morning Leonard

Sorry boet I honestly cannot say, the clutch gave out so it spoiled the whole experience. I would like to try again though.

BTW the blower motor is sorted. It was the resistor unit.

When we have our next get together perhaps we could meet a little early and reset the adaption again.

How is the new business venture coming?

We wait and see on the business.

The banks all want 1/3 in cash, and although I can offer them 120% securities, they want the 3rd in cash, damm stupid if you ask me, but oh well.

Standard, Nedbank and FNB have approved, but they want that 1/3 cash upfront, else no go.

However, bond interest is far less them commerical grade loans, so I am going to go that way, they are coming out of evaluate the house on monday. ABSA may do the entire thing based on securities, as my dads business is with them already, as well as the small bond we still have on the place, so its a waiting game with the pencil pushers.. gotta love that.

Also if you take a bond over 20 years, if you take a dip one month in cashflow, you can steal a bit from the bond, whereas a commercial loan is in 5 years, but if your cashflow forecasts include repayment of principle debt over 5 years instead of 20, the differance in interest rate offered means that the early settlement penalty that you will encounter is nullified, and you have an relief clause built in.

Tis the smart way of doing I think, the business is mine, the only obsticale is if I can get the finance done before another owner can snap it up.

Anybody got a couple of mil laying around ? :p

hae guys. i was researching on the DIY that i tried last weekend and i stumbled into this. my radio controls and cruise control buttons on my steering wheel and not functioning. the buttons don't light up at night but my hooter, and the two levers on either side of the wheel are ok. i thought that i had loose or broken connection inside the slip ring.

i took it apart but every thing was in order. i even unwound the spool and examined every inch of it for damage but there was none.

any help will be highly appreciated.

thats the actual SLIP RING
