Hi All
As you can see, I am not technically a BMW owner. I own a Defender from the era when BMW owned Land Rover. Awesome combination: BMW power and Defender capabilities... Anyways, long enough intro.
I have been trying to fix a problem with my engine - it idles at around 900rpm (with no fluctuation), which is a bit higher than the specified 700 rpm. Sometimes (about one day in 2 months) it will idle at 1200rpm and jump up to around 1600rpm and back to 1200rpm, and repeat every 15-20 seconds. I have done a lot of research and was not sucessful in curing the problem. I have replaced the following components (all parts from BMW, except for VANOS):
- Coolant temperature sender
- oil pressure switch
- airflow meter
- idling control valve
- crank case vent valve
- intake manifold gaskets
- all vacuum hoses
- recon vanos unit (from dr vanos)
- fuel pump
- thermostat
- visco fan unit
- water pump
I have also checked fuel pressure regulator, which was working ok (2.8 bar at idle, jumps up to 3.5bar under load).
No engine codes (did get VANOS mechanical error until I replaced that).
The engine does not have O2 sensor (but for some reason there are catalytic converters in the exhaust line).
Any comments will be appreciated very much.
