These cars have Single Vanos
BMW 6-cylinder engines M50TU, M52, US S50, S52, 1992-1999
3-series E36 93-97, 5-series E34 93-95 / E39 96-98, 7-series E38 95-98, Z3 Roadster 2.8 E36 96-98, EU Z3 Coupe 2.8 E36 96-98,
unfortunately the Single Vanos is not as easy to work on as the double vanos and requires you to lock the cams in the right position... i would not recommend you DIY this unless you are very confident in working on your engine...
I would print out this DIY and give it to the mechanic to make sure he knows how the job should be done and does not have to guess... if he is hesitant rather use someone who has worked on bmw cams before
here is the single vanos seal DIY look though it because it also suggests some other parts that should be looked at while you do this job
A new valve cover gasket will need to be fitted if it has not been changed within the last 50 000km to avoid oil leaks this can be got at BMW
new vanos seals can improve the performance and fuel consumption alot so its definitely worth doing for the cost
