Hi Guys

I have gotten myself into a situation with my beloved BMW.
Over the weekend I damaged my only key & could not start my car.

I got a guy out this morning who was going to code & cut a new key. When he arrived he said my car has a infared key & not 'EWS' system so he cant code it for me, all he can do is bypass the alarm.

He did this & now My central locking does not work (My back doors cannot be opened at all, (deadlocked according to them) & neither do my electric windows :cursin: Apparantly this is all itegrated into the alarm system??

I took the car to 2 differant auto electricians & basically its a extremely time consuming & expensive fix. The problem comes in now where I simply do not have the funds to spend a couple of grand on my car (I wont be anytime soon) & I cant stand to drive a car that is not tip top or atleast working correctly.

Its a 1995 325i with 239k on the clock, motor is solid, body is good & interior is spotless (Black Leather) Does need front left control arm bushes though

What can I expect for the car as is?, probably next to nothing

I am not soo sure about the E36, but to my knowledge, the Windows and Central locking are controlled by the BCM, which is a body control module, also known as a GM, General module.

However I found something that states a door control module controls both of those features like in the newer cars, and this makes perfect sense to me, perhaps it is possible that they have cut power to these modules, I am not convinced at all that its part of the security system.

See below, I would go and do some more research here....

Your particular car/model does not have a general module/body control module to oversee central locking and windows operations.
Instead window operations is managed by the door module (on top of the window regulator motor),
and the central locking module (behind the glove box, but at the right side kick panel, behind the ABS control module). Upon switch activation, central locking module activates the comfort relay which then powers the glass motor thru the door module.
If after module replacement you find that the moonroof is still inactive try checking the moonroof relay which is screwed to the moonroof drive/motor.

Mebe I'm just stupid but can't you have a new key made and coded at a BMW dealership? :mmm: Heard its about R1200 do have this done for a e46

I called BMW & because I do not have a spare the will not give me another key (Apparently company policy) I have to buy new locks all round & ignition, then new key + coding. They said this will be in excess of 6k! What a joke :hammerhead:

Mebe I'm just stupid but can't you have a new key made and coded at a BMW dealership? :mmm: Heard its about R1200 do have this done for a e46

Thats who came out to bypass the alarm. He is coming out again tomorrow morning to see if they can fix my windows & central locking. Holding thumbs

Hey Mate,

I hope you get this sorted, BMW can create a new key for you from your vin number I know of three people who have done this. Including my self, I ordered the key provided the details of the car and collected the key a few days later at no point did the request a my key. For my e46 it cost R 1900. also If your car was manufactured after January 1995, it should be fitted with EWS 2. I think the dealer that told you to change all locks, is trying to rip you a new one.

You only need to prove ownership, eg. registration documents and they can order new keys, which takes a few days.

I find the rural dealers slightly cheaper, honest and more willing to assist, I seem to get better assistance from Worcester BMW then auto atlantic or forsdicks. I wonder zeemax could arrange something?

Guy came out this morning to try & sort the issue out with some diagnostic machine but it kept saying ERROR - Cannot communicate with car ecu. He said that he has to try research the issue & perhaps Monday get the car in

I agree I was told by a friend that when he ordered a new key that he gave them the VIN number & all was good, same story from you guys so ya, reckon they trying their luck, wonder if they work on commission??

Funny thing is I phoned Forsdicks & Auto Atlantic & both gave that same story about the locks.... Anyways hope this other guy can get it sorted

Please keep us posted on your experience of drivesure... we are refering quite a few of our clients to them in cases where they would've had high R/c claims for replacement of keys/whole sytems. It is important to know how they handle this for future reference.

That's odd that you can't get a new key. A friend was involved in an attempted hijack and he walked into SMG Cape Town and got a new cut for between R500 - R1000.

I can give you the number of Combined Electronics in Plattekloof, they work for BMW. Was very happy with service from them.

I do not know if this will help but I can suggest you phone a guy called Trevor, (looks suspect) but awesome guy and if anyone can help I bet he will be able to assist ot at least give u great advice...tell him Tasha said to call...0712156954...try it u got nothing to loose and everything to gain!!:thumbsup:
