yeah it is the M43 8valve motor.
Did the M43 come in 3 flavours or just 1 but down-tuned for the 316i, 318i and the 518?

316i is 8 valve , 318i is 16 valve and 318iS is 1.9 litre 16 valve , same power as 318i but better torque .
Try tuning shops near you but unichip etc can be fitted but rand/kilowatt may be high .

@boereman what are you looking to achieve by chipping it? I doubt it
will be worth it for performance...

We running similar engine.. I got the M43 inn my E46 but 1.9L.. Its a 8 Valve so from what I have researched & read.. there is not much to do to increase power.. and what you can do will cost money & not be a great improvement..

If it was the M42 or M44 engine on the other hand... then a small turbo build will sort it out :)

or take the money and put an exhaust on the car.
if yu also want.adjust the timing a bit(wont give yu much but its a noticeable difference)i done that with my 316 once.also made it run a bit lean(the leaner the meaner)
 bringing back memories now.

Mods on the E36 316i (M43) if you are planning.. Go for a Full SS Free flow.. De baffle the airbox and then Chip it. Then maybe look at getting a 6 Speed Gearbox with a 3.64 Limited slip diff..

Then some 330i brakes up front & 328i brakes in the rear as well as some 17" wheels to fit over them :)

Then you will be semi sorted.. the M43 engine is crappy

The oke who had the car before me decided that he needed to take the airbox cover off, throw it away and then stick a 150mm Simota Cone on it :yuck: so Ive gotta find a new airbox lid.

Will a LSD really help me that much on getting that amount of power or lack thereof on to the road?

I think its definately worth upgrading the anchors as ive had a few hairy experiences of people pulling into my lane quite a bit slower than myself :nonono:

LSD with increased ratio will increase acceleration... the LSD part will increase the fun factor.. and the fact that its a relatively easy & cheap mod for the E36
