Shocks (e92)

Hi Guys,

I think it is time to replace the shocks on my e92 and thought I should get a few suggestions on the best way to do this.

I went to Goldwagen in PTA north looking for both front and rear shocks but they did not have the rear set however promised to let me know this week once they ordered some stock. Plus HQ indicated that it takes 2 - 3 hours to do the work, so they were not going to replace them over the weekend anyway!

HQ will do the labour at cost of R1500.
In total the cost will be around R5500 when getting shocks from GW... is this a reasonable amount or should I just have BMW do the work?

Well I have done a bid more digging and need I say BMW is quoting me crazy prices:

Clubmotors Fountains= R14 200 both rear and front shocks excluding labour
Leo Haese Centurion= R8 884.43 both rear and front shocks excluding labour

I will take my chances with GW and HQ thank you very much

I would go Bilstein

I called these guys (sollysexhaustcentre) they have Gabriels and SACHSs. A co-worker of mine recons Gabriels are a good brand, and should be able to do sterling job...!

Never had to change shocks before, I am clueless as which brands are good and to be trusted, but I noticed on previous posts upon further research that Bilsteins are highly recommended as well! Thanks Luis... :coolShake:

I see from your signature that your vehicle is a 320i

unless you are looking for exceptional quality, and unless you intend to test the handling capabilities to the limit, Bilstein would be "overkill"....at in some cases twice the price to other brands of shocks.
brands that should do a decent job and last you a good couple of years, with normal daily driving styles would be
Gabriel
KYB
Monroe

I also note that our labour charges are below average, maybe time to up our prices a bit.
our labour is R300 per front side, R250 per rear side, and R180 alignment = R1280 total

Hi Ralf, Bantlhoile (the 320) is mostly used by my wife and there will be no testing of handling capabilities. I just need ordinary shocks that can do the job, nothing fancy

so you have answered your own question, Bilstein, although "quality" would be financial overkill

If you want I can check with my supplier on the price for Gabriel shocks

Sachs > Gabriel
To add : Sachs were the OEM Manufacturer for a long time and their pricing vs Gabriel is very competitive.

I also checked with GW Centurion (012) 546 0225, they quoted me R4400 (Bilsteins) for both front and rear shocks... but I will have to make an order and get them the next day after 2pm!

OK bad and good news

Country wide no stock of the front shocks, I tried 3 different suppliers for the Gabriel 70789 and 70790 shocks
apparantly they have been brought into SA as yet
Rear shocks Gabriel 69102 are available @ R 657.00 each

I have sourced KYB front shocks for R1510 each and currently in stock
and when I asked for a matching rear set of KYB shocks, the answer was no stock.

so from my side I could get you KYB front and Gabriel rear

and similar situation on Monroe shocks, rear shocks only available, nil fronts
