Shell vs Castrol Fully Synthetic Decision for e36 M3

Shell Helix Ultra 10w60 or Castrol Edge 10w60 for my BMW M3 e36 4dr 140 000km

History on what oil the car used before not known... I did and oil change a few months ago with Shell hx7 semi synthetic no issues.

Just need some help and the above, they were highly recommended.

I have always used shell on all my cars... heard not so good stories about castrol... but it is my 1st time using fully synthetic.

Well that is what I am using but BMW and Garage 808 says otherwise... Just now I have to do research and I am not saying they are wrong...

On my 3.0l I use shell helix ultra 5w40.

As far as i know the 10w60 stuff is for the E46 M

BMW are idiots. If you say the word M car then they automatically say 10w60. They "recommend" it for an E34 M5 as well and it is most certainly too thick.

If I were you I would just stick to Castrol Magnatec 10w40. I use it in the M5 with a ZDDP additive to prevent scoring on the cams.

How long is a piece of string?
How hard do you drive your car? Is it tracked, such that the oil is over 110 degrees for long periods?
Do you allow it to cool down, after extremely hard driving?
How often do you change your oil?
Yearly? or after a fixed distance?
Do you do short trips, where the oil is not up to operating temperature? Is there excessive idling, such as in traffic?
How many kilometers are traveled at constant rpm (highway)?

These are the questions you should ask yourself, and consider when it comes to oil...
