My 116i recently flashed a series of warning lights and registration plate lights were not working. I took to the dealer and they told me the footwell module is fault & quoted me R7000 to replace and code the car. Can I a secondhand module? And will it require a recode?

Welcome to the site.

Have you done any coding on the car yourself? Sounds like you might have?

From what I have heard you can get a second hand FRM (footwell module) and code your VIN into it.

I haven't done any coding on the car.
I only replaced the motor last year in march.

Are your headlight working? Cos then the footwell module can't have "gone" completely?

Perhaps it just need's a software update/reinstall

I think you are refering the the LCM, if it fails then usually the headlights will remain on and if you turn the light selector switch nothing will happen, also your indicators may not work.

You can take one from another vehicle and put it in your however the LCM is one of the modules that records mileage and by using an already coded one from another vehicle the mileage tamper indicator will come one.

By using BMW CIP/SSS you will not be able to recode the already coded LCM, you can only code one that is "blank"/new when using BMW SSS. There is a program called PA SOFT that will allow you to recode the LCM for your VIN an Mileage, unfortunatly I don't have a cable for that otherwise I could have helped you out.

You seem to be pretty clued up on the coding side. My foot well module has also gone haywire. It either needs to be recoded or replaced. Which area are you in and are you keen to give it a shot?

I am at whits end with BMW and there service so don't mind changing it privately.

The moment I start the car they switch themselves on without me touching the switch, then the front and rear foglight goes on and off without me touching the swith. When I apply the breaks then switch on, and when I release the padle the goes off and on repeatedly

They malfunction they swith themselves on. then the fog lights will then go on and off.
