So after the failure of the autoglym product above, it became increasingly harder to maintain the wheels. On this car.

On all my wheels on the 5er I did the normal clean, clay, wax and it worked well. I only used iron decontaminate remover when it was time to redo the process.

On the X1, I would have to spend almost an hour just washing wheels and arches, every wash.....

It got to the point where the normal wash could not remove the dirt, plus the amount of brake dust is insane. I would wash both cars on the same day, I drive almost double what the wife does and my wheels look 10 times better.

So I decided to get them off, clean, clay, wax hoping it helps.
Started off with this

Did a normal wash using autoglym custom wheel cleaner and various brushes, twice to make sure that as much as could be washed out...,was.
At first glance it looks good, but closer inspection shows what irritates the crap out of me. The brake dust is so thick that it seems to almost eat the clear coat. While I do believe that part of the problem is the refurbishment of the wheels done when I purchased, there's still the issue if brake dust. While cleaning I inspected the brake pads on the front axle. I was surprised to find Jurid in there, the last pad change was done by the dealer under plan so I assume it's an OEM brand, but I am considering changing them.

Sash to me it also looks as if the wheel refurb was not done in the right way.
If you look in this pic, it looks as if there is a run on the clear or it was not smooth out proper when they fixed it.
So it might be that the paint it not completely smooth(might feel smooth when you wipe it with your finger) but when you take 2000grid sanding paper and a block, you'll still see some shiny parts. Means there is a lot of orange peel.
Might be wrong though.

I agree, after all the cleaning the paint was not as smooth. I saw this when first fitting them on after the refurb ( i didn't pay for the refurb, the dealer and tried my best to get it sorted, but after 3 trips to the shop, my car on jack stands, i had to call it quits)

Part of this process i did go over the wheel with 2000 grit water paper, it definitely felt better, I was noticing areas where they touched up and the clear seems to be very thin.

This has got to be the most effort I put into wheels... ever. After using the following products
Valet pro dragons breath
Autoglym custom wheel cleaner
Autoglym clean wheels
DNA-e iron extreme
Carchem bug and tar remover
And every brush I had l, it was still not 100%.

It seemed that everything loosened dirt, tar and brake dust, but not completely. After probably about 5 rounds of dragons breath I resorted to using my fingers to life specific spots, until a spray of dragons breath taking rend very little purple.

Then it's was onto claying which would still get some dirt and tar, amazingly enough, followed by some 2000grit waterpaper on some areas

Lastly, took my powercone and some scholls S3 to bring back that gloss and followed it with 2 coats of rimwax with sufficient time to dry.

I also took the opportunity to try a new product from crazydetailer, valet pro's black to the future

The aim is to get something that can outlast at least the first bit of water encountered on the road. The product is meant to treat rubber, vinyl and plastics as opposed to just putting a layer on top.

Product is quite thick, which makes it easy to apply. You can see it absorbing into the rubber as opposed to the normal ones that seem to remain on top and also cause slinging when driving.

On tyres, it doesn't need to be buffed or reapplied. So far so good.

The other thing noted was that the rear wheels refused to come off the hub. After a fight with the wheels, I saw why, again due to the bad refurb, excess paint and bad prep was the main issue. I cleaned off everything and copper compounded the areas that are prone to rust.

Lastly, when one takes off the wheels, one is always tempted to clean the arches. :) did as much as I could without painting the disks and calipers. I prefer clean over painted. I didn't apply any dressing at this point

This car really impressed me, it's done a couple of our trips to Durbs and surrounding areas while on holiday, in the first year of ownership we racked up over 20000km, which is shocking for me, especially since my 5er does the longer daily drive and this car does basically half the mileage.

My trip to Durban and the south coast saw me achieve 5.8 on a tank (63L tank), covering 1010km & a further 5.9L when we did sun city

I record my trips religiously and always fill up to first click to try and get a decent consistency. Accordingly to fuelly, we have covered 31661 since April 2017 & have achieved an average of 6.7 over that 30k km, which I think is impressive considering the wife's daily drive sees her in Pretoria cbd traffic.

In terms of maintenance, I have not spent a cent other than service items, but she is due for front brake pads and the rear disks have a decent lip on them so I will probably change all in one go.

But as in life, some accidents cannot be avoided. A day before leaving to Durban we wife happened to roll into a bakkie in front. It was at a merge and there were no cars, so she assumed he would move immediately and while she looked for cars coming from behind, she took her foot of the brake and the rest is history.

The damage was not bad, initial inspection saw the bumper, headlight, grill and fog light broken. Damage was mimimal on the bakkie and am glad the driver of the bakkie handled the situation in the best possible way.

After enjoying our holidays, it was time to get it sorted, since my last insurance does not pay for BMW arc and after seeing some of the work coming out the Arc, I wasn't too worried about it. I chose Eldan Auto body in PTA west, only because they are Mercedes-Benz approved and I had the workshop manager take me through workshop showing me their process. I looked at the cars ready for delivery as well as the cars they were repairing, one of which was a BMW M4 btw, but there was a variety of premium cars in their shop which was very comforting.

As usual there was a delay after they stripped to check for more damage as parts were approved, but getting them was a hassle. The insurance wanted to use an aftermarket bumper(new) and a second hand headlight to match the right. I was against the aftermarket bumper and rather asked that the OEM one be repaired as none of the respective clips had been damaged. A second hand headlight seemed to be an issue as I asked specifically that it match the condition of the right unit and eventually a new OEM part was purchased along with an OEM foglight. When the panelbeater had painted the bumper and had all the parts I popped in and found all the other small bits and bobs that were being replaced. I noticed the front cradle was removed, only to be told it had some minor damage and it is being replaced with a new OEM. They replaced rubbers behind the grills and all clips or screws were OEM which is surprising, but refreshing.

Colour match was 100% & no blending was done, thank goodness.

All in all, took 3 weeks but I prefer quality and no reason to go back.

Nice Sash! It's so difficult to find a shop that does good spray and repair work. From the pics the bonnet looks a different colour to the bumper, but it's probably just lighting and it being a picture.
