SA included in huge BMW recall

FRANKFURT, Germany - German automaker BMW is recalling 176 000 vehicles around the globe to correct a problem with their power brake systems.

That includes South Africa, where 5533 vehicles are involved, according to a BMW SA spokesperson. They and another 76 200 units in the US - among other countries - will be recalled for mechanical attention.

BMW in Germany says in rare cases an interruption in oil supply to a part can mean loss of hydraulic power-assistance to the brakes. The brakes will still work but the driver would have to press harder on the pedal.

DRIVERS WARNED

Affected models include 2012-14 BMW 320i and 328i sedans; 2014 328i xDrive sports wagons; 2012-13 BMW 528i sedans 2013-14 BMW X1 sDrive28i and X1 xDrive28i; 2013-14 BMW X3 xDrive28i, and 2012-14 BMW Z4 sDrive28i.

The company said owners would be notified to bring their cars in for repair and warned drivers that if pressure assistance is lost they should pull off the road and call BMW roadside assistance.

BMW SA's Edward Makwana told Wheels24: "I can confirm that as part of a corrective quality initiative, BMW is recalling some 176 000 vehicles worldwide, 5533 of them in South Africa.

"The recall applies (in South Africa) to 1, 3, 5, X1, X3 and Z4 Series vehicles equipped with four-cylinder petrol engines produced between June 2012 and August 2013. In some cases problems with the camshaft can arise and this can affect the power brake booster unit.

"The camshafts will be inspected and reworked as necessary. Corrective measures will be performed by authorised BMW service centres (dealerships)."

It's the second BMW recall in South Africa this year: 6000 E46 units were called in in May to correct an airbag problem that prompted five other major automakers to recall a total of 3.4-million vehicles worldwide.

Crazy but what is this ?

I might be one of the people needing this treatment as everything I've tried hasn't gotten that Airbag light off

They would not recall if there was no concern. This is also part of the reason why I never buy brand new. After a new model release.

I would suggest you take the car to an approved BMW dealer to clarify.
I took mine recently to Kunene Sandton and they replaced the battery cable, with no charge to me. On their side, their systems automatically picks up any outstanding recall campaigns and flags your vehicle to have the repair done. I am out of M/plan.

Called being drunk  Just kidding.

Heard this on the radio the other day, isn't this related to the braking system?

you guys need still need to learn alot on the F30 based on a lot of the comments.

I rather be part of a recall instead of being ignored by a brand

3series has evolved , either you with it or stuck in the dark ages.

My car went in today to SMG, they told me about the campaign, and they need to do my car. I said that its only for the latest models since 2012 and 4 cylinder engines, they said no its all the models, incl the pre-facelift E87.

Mine is a 2007 build and a 6 cylinder. I was confused at why they needed to do mine. At least I dont have to pay for it.
