Hi guys,

I am currently looking at a 1993 535 i for the price of R22 000
It has 250 000km's on it,

I would like to know what the running costs are on these cars as well as fuel consumption and problems that usualy occur on them if any.

Any advice would be highly apreciated

Thank You

On the contrary, I like Merc's, just mostly prefer the Be-ems. Advice on the 535i? Hope this helps. Imo a fantastic car during it's time, think it was SA car of the year in 1989. Mechanically, motor is very tough, but cooling system must be tip top, or you can have unending problems. Fan clutches go occasionally. This is a heavy and powerful car, so it eats suspension components, so they must all be checked. Exhausts last a decade, originals are pricey. Electronic faults at this age are plentiful, but are relatively easy to put right as, by today's standards, they are rudimentary. Bodies are strong, but look for rust around both screens, door bottoms, and at front and rear of car, especially around the boot rubber. The interior is hard wearing, the main issue can be a sagging roof lining. An Inspection 1 service will set you back about R2000, tyres around R700 each, and consumption will be around 13/14 l/100km. Hope this helps :)

I like Mercs I also have one they are not BM's but excell in their own way for sure. What's wrong with yours?

E34 535 is a little heavy on fuel and as fantastic and ledgendarily unbreakable as the M30 engine is, it's old tech now.

I would take an E34 525i vanos over that any day.

Well, Rick ,
My 420se has no brakes as the calipers have given in, the engine has been taken out of the car because the previous owner tried to bypass the cam sensor and now it wont start, the rear window switches are buggerd, thinking of buying a 560 engine for it, almost double the power,

According to the internet the 420 has 157kw and 310nm of torque and the 560 has 255kw and 533 torques :excited:

It's a fantastic car but with the fuel prices now, I would think twice on a 535i. Mine gave me 5km/Liter no matter how I drove it.

I miss my car but not the consumption.:thumb:

525i with vanos motor is ok,but needs a few revs and gets vocal higher up rev range .540i same or less than 535i on fuel.
