Running cost of E87 120i

Hi guys,

I am considering buying a 2006 E87 120i as my next car, but just doing some research first. So the first thing I want to know is what is the price of a major and minor service?

What are some of the issues these cars tend to give, if any, and what did it cost you to have it fixed.

Hope you can help me out.

Hi Jakes.

Not sure how relevant this is, but I have a 2005 120D with 158 000KMS. No issues in 4 years, just services. These cars are built relatively well.

Hi Jakes, we've been driving our 120i for the past 4 years, 134 000km now. No major problems, only services done, brakes maybe once in 3 years or so.
Also the tyres which are run flats is also quite expensive, but that they are tough & endurable is very true! That I can honestly say.
Tyres & brakes like any other vehicle goes hand in hand with how you drive.

Things we had as other than services were the vacuum pump starts leaking oil, & the oil seperator blocking up internally, the Agents will charge you an arm + leg to have it repaired though.

Or you can contact me when the time comes. :=): (We are also in Cape Town)

Awesome car to drive & have! Hope you end up making it yours!

Hey Jakes, I would personally try find a 120d, for a little bit more you get a higher fun factor as well as fuel economy, cheaper minor services as you have no spark plugs etc etc.... Now yes, I am biased as I do own a 120d, but I'm sitting on 137000 kms and still having a ball

BMW has no major or minor service, each service item has its own lifespan, depending on driving conditions, the items last much longer than on a typical car. No major service as you do not change a cam belt because the engines are chain driven.

I have a 116i with 219,000Km now. I only suffered a failure on the air-con compressor only at 140,000Km

Though not the same, I have a 120D and I can say, apart from the Turbo horror I went through at 98k km, it has been a pretty awesome car so far :D

If you have N46, n47, n42 (120i N46 my case) you MUST replace the timin chain tensioner with the new model
Its a DIY work, very easy and fast, and the part just cost 40 US$

Cheers!

I have a 2005 118i 143 000km. Still running sweet!

All these cars will obviously be out of motorplan, curious to know how many of you guys took a 3rd party warranty???

I took a 2year/unlimited mileage. Never used it. It ends Dec 2013. R6k for nothing.

I never took 3rd party warranty. I'm on 233 000Km now and no issues at all, only normal service, although I feel like my starter will be the first item to go.

got a 07 3door 120i. air con compressor replaced at 104k km and normal service items. No problems at all. Mileage is currently at 180k kms! Was used a lot for long distance driving. It is a pleasure to drive those distances too!

This timing tensioner, what does it do?
Also does it make a difference or improve anything for the car?
In my case I have a 116i 05 model.

Worth it to change?
Thanks

My 116i 2006 is sitting at 320k km, issues so far aircon compressor, steering column, pulleys, battery. I have a knowledgeable private BMW mech so servicing is a breeze and cheap. At this mileage I do oil service every 10k km...I gotta say its reliable!

BMWs run their camshafts off of a timing chain, unlike many other vehicles which use a timing belt.
The idea behind this is that the chain has no danger of snapping and destroying your engine. It's not as perfect as it sounds because the chain still stretches with use.

The timing tensioner presses on the timing chain to eliminate the slack which starts to develop as the chain stretches. The tensioner is spring operated and, like any metal spring, losses its strength over time. It is strongly recommended that the timing tensioner be replaced if your mechanic is advising you to.

What's the worst case if you neglect to do it? The timing chain stretches far enough that it skips a tooth when you come off the throttle. This will lead to tears and new engine.
