Looking forward to the results. I think to achieve 3.2l/100km you'd have to keep below 100kph :fencelook:

I went to limpopo the other day and got 3.2l/100 on the way there but on the way back i only got 4l/100 beacuse of traffic between 100kmh and 130kmh. Usually to varsity and back wich is 50km a day i average 4l/100 and thats peak hours and 20km highway. So i reckon i can do it. Cant wait though

I call 4l/100km.

Those cars are super light on fuel. I did a trip to Mtunzini at around 140km/h cruise control with heavy overtaking and 4 people in the car at 5.2l/100.

320d ftw. I dont think ile trade my car for any other. Maybe just msport lol or 330d. Not even my girlfriends fiat500 900cc turbo is lighter on fuel.

OP, please post the results when you get there but also post the end results of the return trip when you get back, as going there is downhill so too say and doesn't truly reflect the real fuel consumption. But cant wait for the 2 pics to be honest

Lol . Im more excited for testing the fuel consumption than the actual holiday hahaha. I will do. On the way up i should get 4l/100. So average there and back should not be more than 3.5l/100 . On the highway @120kmh eco mode . If i reset the indicator the current fuel consumption is 2.8l/100 on a flat road.

:withStu: that is how much I got last year driving from Sabie to eMalahleni but it was at 100km/h (friends car had issues). Good luck and looking forward to seeing the results.

Ive done quite a bit of economy runs in my E90 320d, and I would give you a few tips, if you are keen to get accurate results.
  • The consumption figures down to the coast can be ignored on its own, rather combine the consumption with the trip back to get an average of both. There are a range of factors that will make your consumption differ from going down and riving back up (driving from altitude down vs up, more O2 at the coast vs on the high veld etc)
  • Ignore the OBC. Its proven not to be 100% accurate. Rather use actual liters usage for the TOTAL distance you travel.
  • Ignore the fuel gauge. Ive heard about tons of people saying: "OMG I traveled down to Durbs with a 1/4 tank. its a known fact that the needle will fall quicker from 50% - 0 than from 100- 50%"
  • make sure your tires are the right pressure

I rate you can get 3.8L ACTUAL usage down, if you keep your speeds at 120, or lower. Combined, 4.8 - 5.2L

Ive done a trip From JHB > CT (again its one way, so doesnt really count), 1461km with 66.48L of diesel. 4.55L per 100km actual usage. At this point I got bored, the trip back to JHB was probably closer to 6L per 100km

Best advice right there, the obc can be quite a bit off

I achieved 3.2L/100 in a 1.9 TDI Jetta 4 going from JHB to George a few years ago, but it was the lowest reading on a looooong straight. It wasn't the average. It stayed at 3.2 for a long time on that straight so naturally it took the vehicle a long time to let that figure start climbing again.

So not 3.2l/100

But very close. A lot of trucks close to the end. It was on 3.3.. sad. But still good!!

Yea its good. I must not complain. I have to say i was doing 100km/h for the last 200km because there is absolutely no lights on the n2 south. At 120kmh it stayed at 3.6/3.7
