Reset service indicator

Hi guys - I am doing a DIY on front brake pads this weekend. My E60 530D has been nagging me for a new set although there still seems to be more than enough meat on what I can see on the outside pads.....maybe the inner ones are shot mmmmmmmh but I doubt.

Just a question - if I replace them, does the computer automatically "realise" that there are new ones in place and reset or is that part of the DIY job? I did try to find something on that in the threads but no luck.

what are you referring to?what do you think the computer must reset?

did the brake pad replacement warning light come on?

if it did come on, 1st establish whether its front or rear pads that must be changed.

after you've replaced the pads, the light wont go off. you must purchase a new sensor.

if the light on the dash is troubling you, cut the sensor wire and connect the two wires. light will go off, than you can replace sensor monday or whenever.

ps threads on weekends or late friday afternnons wont get much "attention" or "response"

Thats just it - I did a visual on the outside pad and there is about 5mm left - I then phoned the dealership. They told me that the computer "judges" when you need new pads and that if your car is still under motorplan, even if there is 5 or 7mm left, they change the pads. Now on my computer, if you start the car it warns you that a service is due, if you then go on to the service menu and you check the front brake pads - the icon next to it is yellow and it says that the pads should be changed in 700km.......even though there is enough left for a couple of thousand k's. So I seriously doubt that the sensor has tripped. So this warning on the computer - can this be reset?

Ok

You have 2 warning systems,

Sensor
Thats when a physical wear sensor is destroyed, and needs to be replaced.

Then there is also a time/distance driven service menu on cars with I-Drive, that judges driving style, bla bla bla....

If you still have enough pads left, screw it, leave em, wait until you hit the wear sensor.

You can reset the service time indicator

Much appreciated buddy.....the instructions are simple enough thanx!

The senors on the brakes will trigger when the sensor hits the brake disc (these sensors notify you the pad life has been reached). If the sensors did is not touching the the disc you can re-use the sensor instead of buying new ones.

Now the warnings on the dash OBD is mileage driven and some you will see like the service for the exhaust is time based.

Yup sensors are still fine so I am only replacing pads soon! Saves a bit of dosh!

Hi guys: I just had my brake pads replaced on my 2001 e39 525i, and before they where replaced the pads where on under 1mm, but I never got a warning light or anything from the Onboard Computer. I was just wondering whether this is because I don't have break sensors (do they come standard?) or are they are damaged, and how easy is it to find out or see the condition of the sensors?

Thanks.

Sensors come as standrad, in a lot of cases they are never replaced when the brakes are done, cost about R70 each extra......its a consumable....so....

I find it best to just check the pads manually when I doing something like washing the wheels or such, then just replacing them when needed before the warning goes off in the cluster, saves from spending money on the sensor as well, but that is just me.
