Depends on how much disk storage is required as well as how much monthly bandwidth the site needs... There's plenty companies that offer hosting, but perhaps not as many that have the resources to host something as big as this forum

If the forum were to switch to another server, what would the process be? How much downtime etc?

Have you investigated alternate service providers yet? I don't have any experience in web hosting but I'm sure that downtime could be minimal if the switch is planned properly - it's a case of taking the forum offline, getting a copy of all domain data, giving it to the new web hoster to put on their server ét voila = online again.

But better get an expert to confirm that...

What other companies can be used as servers in SA? Maybe some research is needed...

This site gives a breakdown of SA's largest Web Hosting Companies - hope this might help you select an alternative, or at least start the search in the right place  :

Reply from Afrihost this evening:

"I've backed up the log file for bmwfanatics.co.za (it was the only one that was excessively large) and emptied it out.

I've also placed a copy of the file in the user directory of bmwfanatics.co.za "

Lets monitor things from tomorrow onwards.

I got notice that large scale areas of GP has eskom blackouts. I am not sure if Afrihost has back up generators. But if the forum goes offline today Eskom could be the reason.

Eskom disrupted my entire day. Could only log on now.

Did the same issue occur at 3pm?

The update is to upgrade the MySQL database to a newer version which will reduce query times to the database. This will increase overall speed.

Down time starts this evening at 22h00 to midnight.

This will solve the issues we have had with the server traffic spiking during mid day.
