Replacing steering wheel on E46

Hi all
I have to replace my E46's steering wheel due to delamination on the foam from the steel rim.
I have been given a new one but need to know the following:
1. Must I disconnect the battery first (cos of airbag)
2. Is it a simple job to replace the wheel? I know that I need to get a special srewdriver adapter to undo the two bolts behind the airbag unit.

Can anyone offer me any advice please?
Thanks

yes, disconnect battery so you dont get an airbag light later.

you dont need any special screw driver, just one that can fit through the holes and push the airbag retaining springs.

real easy to do.

I would say lock your steering too, as this will make aligning the new wheel easier

Can you explain the procedure step by step as I am concerned about removing and replacing the centre piece of the wheel.
Much apprciated.

1. disconnect battery
2 use long flat head screwdrive and put in holes behind airbag. go in at an angle at around 90degrees to the ground.
3. push/fiddle around until you find a moving resistance.
4. with the other hand, you will be able to see the airbag moving, so pull it slightly.
5. do the same on the otherside.
6. airbag will come out, disconnect wire, and place airbag in a safe place, preferably in a way that will not turn it into a missile if it did happen to go off.
7. remove steering retaining nut

But knowing my bad luck, the bag will deploy whilst I have the screwdriver under the centre piece.
So hence the apprehension.
You talk about finding "moving resistance". Can you explain more or elaborate? Does the centre piece just "pop" off?
And where can I insert the screwdriver? Are the points marked off?

The retaining spring, clips are true for the round sports steering wheel but if you have a square or triangular one you will need the tool you mention above to loosen the airbag. I see you are in Stellies too - PM me if you are still unsure.

As far as I have seen the e46 steering wheels come with a notch to allow you to easily align it after removal, so the fitment should at least not be a problem.
