Replacement car recommendations

With the pending deal on my 330i almost finalized, I'm in the market for a replacement. This will be my daily driver, with a 35KM-40KM daily commute in peak traffic (on most days), so fuel consumption is a consideration but needs to have a good "fun factor" too with reasonable maintenance (at an independent place of course). Bear in mind, I got a bit bored of the E46 330i, so the bar is set above that ....

My choices, in order of preference are:

1) Mini Cooper S R56 manual - my preferred choice, as it is light on fuel an would make an ideal daily driver, but still has enough poke to make it fun when the roads are clear. So far, this is my first choice as I really like the Mini's. 07/08 models are within my budget - just need to find one in the colour I like.

2) E90 330d Auto (pre LCI but must have M sport kit) - logical choice and with a bit of work (decat, chip) would make it a very good/fun car. It's just that I'm not a huge fan of the E90 in general, but love the 3.0d engine and it's the only one of these 3 I'd have in auto (which is ideal for traffic). 05/06 M sport models within my budget and a few on the market.

3) E46 M3 - not easy to find in good condition sub R200k and not sure if it would make a good daily driver. Fuel consumption might be a major issue and the heavy clutch in traffic might be a problem, BUT, it's a M car - nuff said. However, have not seen a clean one within my budget in a while.

So with a budget of R150k - R200k what would you recommend. I don't want something too old (<2004ish) ... bear in mind: decent consumption, fun and reasonable maintenance.

Is there anything else I should be looking at. Saw a few E60 530d's but one's with sports pack are R220k+ in general

Between E90 330d + maintenence & M3 + heavy fuel consumption + maintenence..... I would say go with the former :thumb:

Just one thing about the MINI.

The R53 (supercharged) MINI is not light on fuel, its actually rather heavy. Do not go by the Manufacturer figures as they are no-where near that in real life.

The turbo version (R56) MINI is twice as economical so rather try get one of those. :=):

Yep - the R56 is the only one I would consider

Fuel consumption between your old 330i and E46 M3 wont be much of a difference under normal everyday driving

I say go for the M Power. Problem is to find a clean one

Why not a E90 320i??? :fencelook:

Just kidding!!!

Im not a Mini fan, so i would be biased towards the 330d and M3. M3 would be my choice if fuel bill was not an issue.

Fuel for the M3 will be allot in traffic. If you go near any standing traffic or the accelerator it jumps to about 17l/100km.

No E39 M5 in your choices?? :fencelook:

Actually thought about it, but an E39 M5 is not really an ideal "run-about/traffic" type of car .... and the fuel bill will not be pretty.

That's also why it's at the bottom of the list

for pure fun the R56!

If practicality is something youd like the 330d..

The MPower I -assume- is going to be quite a costly car to own in terms of petrol, performance and maintenance..

I guess a Mini would then be my choice, not a big fan of the interior but the 1.6T really goes and the handling is fantastic.

What about a 335i with a year or two of motorplan left? Or are they way out of your budget?

I think that you'd get bored of the mini, while it's got that go-kart feel, it doesn't have those long legs of the 330i.

330d would be my preference for your situation. For me, if I had to upgrade with those options, it would be the ///M as I don't have to deal with much traffic.

One more vote for the 330d.
I would say, test drive them all and decide. Try to save up a bit of a deposit and stretch to a 330d with low mileage and a later model.
I should have :argh:
