Probably not correct info, but what I've heard you might need to go to the dealers and get the spare key (that you've bought from BMW of course ;) ) and have it programmed to the ECU.

I've seen a few guys offer key programming, but not sure on where you can buy an additional BMW key, outside the dealership.

sounds like you using the service key?..try take it t bm n ask them if the original central locking system and alarm are working..cos ul need t order keys, which if im not mistaken u can only get from the agents..then theyl program the key to the car and all should be well :)
only downside is key prices...i had my key stolen in a armed robbery costed aroun 2500, but it is a newer key...maybe that keys cheaper..ask bm :) GL

Programming can be done yourself. If you get the blank have it cut to the service key. Programming involves a set sequence. Something like open all doors, key in position 2 for 10 sec, close the right door, turn on the aircon, put your left foot out and turn it all about. Downloadable from the Internet.

Yeah, that won't work with a blank key. Especially not since the immobilizer is completely separate. drivesure.co.za might be able to make a new key for you for a much lower price than the dealers...

You get blanks with the transponder guts. While some are designed for it you have a tatty key and want to make it look better, you so get the full key.
