Recording a Record. How is it done?

Hi Guys,

So with some of the recent dilemma regarding breaking records, etc. I thought its necessary to get an understanding of how speeds and times become records?

IN SA:
How is it set?
Who sets it?
What proof is required?

INTERNATIONALLY:
How is it set?
Who sets it?
What proof is required?

So lets say, i drive a BMW E90 320i and i run a top speed of 200km/h and a QM time of 20.3seconds.

The current record for the same car as above is 201km/h and 21.3seconds.

Who do i contact? Both locally and internationally?

Thanks
Arbee

Disclaimer: This thread is not aimed at anyone. I merely want to understand how it works.

For a record to be recognized its firstly needs to be a MSA event with timing equipment that can do printouts. This printout will show the reaction time , 60ft time, 400m time with exit speed.

MSA inspects a car for safety first before even looking into anything else.

Once passed the car can race.

If a person does a time he/she thinks is a record they can go onto
dragtimes.com and input their data there. Once uploaded it will not necessarily mean its record.

There is no such thing as a record for fastest 400m/1km factory stock turbo etc.

Records are based on a CLASS a person is put into based on their mods.

It use to be at a MSA event backed up by a second run within 1% on the same day.
Since then its slightly diluted as there are many non MSA events as well as a lot of cars that do not run in organized series such as national or regionals.

Internationally a slip needs to be presented generally on forums or dragtimes as mentioned before. Most tracks overseas give you your time slip on the return lane the moment you have done your run. This slip is the proof and it starts circulating vehicle specific forums creating a set precedence. A lot of times the same politics we have here exist and camera back up is needed as well as arguments about fast and slow tracks etc so it is not a fine art anywhere unless it falls within a specific race series which has set guidelines.

I remember this from my first ODI experience. MSA was present, they scrutineered each car. The timing equipment was also tested and confirmed with some equipment they had.

Ok, so nationals and regionals dont require MSA. They probably have stringent checks in place to make sure all is in check.

Im going to do some research and check around.

Thanks You Shaun and George.
