Rechargeable Battery E46 key replacement

Hi, I'm struggling to find the exact mAh rating replacement battery for my 320D key (a Panasonic VL-2020/HFN).
I can get a higher mAh rating one (30mAh instead of 20mAh), will that cause any problems?

RS Components also have the correct battery.
Are you sure the battery is faulty? 9 out of 10 times you just need to reprogram the key. I know, this happened to me once. My keys are 9 years old and I never had to replace the batteries. I did have to reprogram the key though.

How often do you guys alternate your keys? I have got into the habit of swapping and using both the main and "spare" keys for both my car and my Wife's car so that the batteries get chance to work and not sit...

I use the spare key once a month on a long drive - 45 mins to an hour.

hi there, the mAh rating refers to the storage capacity of the battery, so the 30 will work fine, just store a little more power, as long as the output (mA) is equal or better and the voltage correct. The device will draw what it needs. Like a car, put a truck battery in it, it still works fine, just takes longer to charge and lasts longer when starting.

Hi guys.

Iandudley, sorry for the hijack.

I also have problems with my keys. The 1 I can use the remote to open the car, but it won't start the car. The other I can't use the remote to open but it can start the car...

Any advice on how to get them to work properly again as they used to?

don't know the E46 keys too well, but the E36 key hat a small black "chip" in the corner near the key, this carrier the id for the ignition. Start by swapping batteries around, try to get 1 working right. While it's open, look for a tiny (about 5mm square, tapered a little) chip, separate from the electronic board. This will prevent the car from starting if not in place or the wrong one. Don't know where to get a replacement, but at least see if that's at fault by changing it over also. Good luck!

I replaced my E46 battery.

Got the replacement part from www.mantech.co.za
The replacement batteries already had two terminal wires tack-welded to the battery surface, but not in the same configuration, so with a bit of coaxing I managed to trim both the keyfob's wire and the batteries wire enough so I could solder them together.

You just have a little short. Put your key down and don't throw it on the table, especially just after it starts working fine.

Hi Everyone, thanks for all the replies, etc.
1. I've already taken my spare key apart to get the battery out so no chance of a re-programme there on my spare key. Will just have to wait till I get a new battery.
2. I can get the higher mAh rating battery from a number of places so it's price and availability that will win out (RS components, etc.)
3. The key is also working intermittently ani i have just come back from a long drive down to the Garden Route so maybe it just needs a re-programme as well. Will try that and let the forum know.
