Hi everyone,

Hope this is the right spot for this info and that it can assist some else somewhere - if a duplication of previous posts, apologies.

A couple of months ago, a fine rattling noise emerged from the the engine side of things, the characteristic of the sound very close and in sync to that of the induction sound only occurring at low RPm's, so my search started at the airbox, did find the rubber buffer (part #9 - Realoem) on which the intake muffler sits missing, got it, fitted it, rattle quieter but still there.

With winter arriving, on a couple of very cold mornings i experienced some faint jerkiness again low rpm for a block or two and once or twice a pronounced rattle for a couple of seconds and then gone car pulled as usual when cold.

Then one morning on a MP visit a week ago i started experience the faint jerkiness after driving a good couple of KM's at low rpm's, being Auto this does happen a lot so i shifted to M6 and noticed the jerkiness below 2000 rpm and accelerator far down, definitely felt like a slight intermittent misfire but no light on dash. The on the way to my 1st stop the next morning i was greeted with a rough idle and jerkiness form idle onwards and a loud rattle coming from the intake side of things and still no light of any sort on the dash, i stopped at the very 1 st possible place to open to see if something as broken off somewhere, sounded as if something should have, stopped the engine restarted all is quiet again as if nothing wrong, perfect idle and power.

So I started, google-ing profusely at possible causes, DISA seemed to be a good suspect, as the last CMS said plugs only due in +/- 25k km's so that shouldn't be a issue, but still back in my mind as they have done close to 100k km's.

Driving back home, car started fine with again only slight hesitation in low RPM, but no light, got home started stripping to get to the DISA, found this, eventually:

One Disa Flap completely "Flenters" green seal/gasket half way missing and flap completely dislocated and flap about as you shake it, turns out to be quite an expensive rattle toy in its current state, after a trip to a Dealer! also no stock.

Hunting down a second hand one commenced, ever tried phoning and asking for a Disa Valve? Good Luck! Eventuality found someone who knew what it is and certain they should have one, couple of minutes later phone rang, "yes we do!" So i went to pick it up and part with 1700 rands and received a "of course it will work" warranty with my "new" dusty valve, at least in the fully open and not in a halfway and moveable state the only other one i was able to track down elsewhere, by the way these things uses a worm type gear system driven by a motor, so they cannot/shouldn't be moved by hand.

Fitted it, put every back together, started her up, idles nicely revs up nicely, test drive time, started off slowly all seem well actually very well, pulls even a little better than before and that annoying high pitch rattle is definitely gone, Yay! ......o - oh something that felt like a stutter again, low RPM, maybe just the ECU adjusting to the "new" valve, car still pulls fine though, Baffled!

Next Morning off to Thabazimbi, with a very cold start with no problem whatsoever, all must be working then i guess, that was until i passed Bela-Bela felt a sudden drop in power and now a noticeable misfire at idle and only below 2000 rpm as soon as it goes past all fine again, smooths out, again no light of any sort and "Check OK" at least the terrible sound of the Disa shaking about is gone, but the new old DISA with it's "of course it will work" warranty is still a concern as these are believed to be doing their bit at low RPM's.

Made it back home the evening and the next day I stopped by my new found swipe and sign place again and discussed my concerns and issues with them , they offered to run a diagnostic of the car and there we found it, misfire Cylinder 6, which lead me to the next string of events....

Nice story... Waiting for the second installment...

Is this car not currently on motorplan?

Glad you got it sorted out! These DISA flaps have gotten so expensive over the years! Madness actually! Cannot cost that much to make! :nonono:

still need to write my follow up to this, will get to it soon.

in the mean time time the coolant leak surface again, so a radiator swop looks to be on the cards soon!

Looks to be on on both sides of the radiator, about 7-10cm from the bottom. looks almost as if it is where the core goes into he side panels.

Unfortunately did not take any pics while i had all the covers stripped out when i checked.

Have you had something similar?

Seams where the tank(s) meets the core, well known point of failure for most radiators not just BMWs.

Car still on plan ? If so get it the whole system looked at.
