By way of example R9000 for a set of plug leads? surely that is wrong on so many levels.

:whip:

That was a knife in the chest:rollsmile:

Seriously - they are absurd with their prices

Ooops I accidentaly let the secret of your wealth out to the whole forum.

Yes children our dear friend has a new set of plug leads for the e34 M5 at a cost of R9000 or R1200 for each lead wire.

Wealth???? pfft.....
The only way i got my grimy paws on that set was because I bribed a certain BMW associate with greasy KFC to let those plug leads "fall off the truck"

That KFC bribe money caused me to eat pap en water for the rest of that month

Vanos prior to cleaning and fitting new seal,

New seals being fitted

Oil pump pickup with complimentary plastic pies stuck on it

This is what came out between the screen and the edge of the opening.
The pieces were wedged in and had to be pried out.

Here are some images of the engine bay before and after it was washed with prepsol and a high pressure washer.

The pictures doesn't do the before and after justice.

....and the X5-4.6iS was delivered yesterday.

We have started preparing the engine bay for the motor installation and are in the process of noting the water hoses which will require to be replaced as well as power steering hoses vacuum hoses etc.

Just finished stripping the front and cleaning the engine bay thoroughly.

Installation should commence Monday.

Pics to follow.

Perfection at its best... Never seen such pride before. The attention to detail is unheard of.
After reading this thread , i have the highest respect for the surgeon bringing this beast back to life in this admirable fashion.
Those who know anything about the internals of a BMW engine will truely appreciate this guys work.
All the best..:praise:

Whilst doing some work on the oil sprayer bar I lost a nut.

We had to strip the sump and we found it just ready to drop into the oil pump gear.

Engine bay ready for the motor.

other workshops would probably have left the nut in there and decided it was not a problem...

then if the oil pump suddenly went it would not be their fault...

Please someone remind me not to do this again.........................for a car as big as the X5 there is precious little space to install the motor and ancillaries.

Pics later.......

As promised some pics

The following one is particularly interesting it does however no justice to the length of the drivetrain.
Measured from tip of the water pump to the end of the gearbox at 1,79m.

Huge is an understatement.

This was a tight fit I promise you.

We sat there looking at the engine bay wondering how we would manage the installation.

Where there is a will there is a way.....

Left side looks pretty empty

After 4 hours it no longer was.

Why 4 hours you ask?

Simple we had to go and find an octopus to thread the hoses on what is the tightest of openings and there is a collection of 5 of them that need to be placed in exactly the same space.

This is what R2000 looks like although a portion of it is hidden from view.

For all its size this has been the most challenging installation we have had to date.
Had we known in advance what we know now I am of the opinion that we would have asked that the assembled drivetrain is installed elsewhere by someone else other than us very far away from us and not by us.......you get the drift by now I think.

For all its size the X5 is narrow and the engine is a tight fit with precious little room to work in.
The engine and gearbox are unbalanced as you have a diff attached to the side of the sump as well as a transfer case at the back of the box.
Both being on the left side it makes the engine tilt to the left and trying to get it in straight and level becomes an exercise in futility.

Now we need to install the drive shafts which entails dropping the suspension.

We shall post pics of that later.

That pic doesn't do the size of the engine and gearbox justice at all. It's extremely big and seems like it came from a truck.
It really is amazing considering Peter received the whole engine in boxes, and everything was completely unorganised but he still managed to put everything back together perfectly. Hardest puzzel ever!!
