I expected nothing less than the best possible job :)

Highly doubt any other engine builder would even give the rings a second thought... I must applaud you for being so dedicated to doing a proper long lasting job...

engine will probably be better than when it came out the factory once you done with it

Good luck with this everyone involved

Think I'm more excited to hear the outcome. You better be bringing this down to the Eastern Cape.

Block was cleaned and prepared for assembly.

Oil sprayers being fitted.

Mains fitted ready for dry measurement

Measured and all is well. Due to the crank having four bolt mains it took longer to set correctly so the vaseline reacted with the plastigauge.

Crank installed torqued and degreed.

Pistons being prepared. Eight of them to clean so plenty time to reflect on ones belly button and solve global events.
Used a combination of Prepsol and ATF with a plastic brush and fine steel wool

Now we need rings and we are having a time locating them with the agents wanting R1 000 000 or something ridiculous.

So......eventually located rings and we are on the home stretch.

One thing I can say about BMW limited run engines in this case an ALPINA motor, is that parts are difficult to find at reasonable prices.

I now understand why secondhand Japanese engines cost upwards of ZAR60 000 and your old engine.

We spent the weekend gapping rings and assembling untill we were stopped by the lack of 2 head bolt washers and an oil sprayer.

So tomorrow we will be ordering an oil pump at a cost of some R3 000 000 and a few bits and bobs.

Pics in a moment

Looking good Peter. Just love the shiny new valves.
So what you're saying is that one should stay away from the e53 4.6is X5?

Well to be fair, it has covered distances equal to several trips around our solar system

As far away as possible as BMW have gone moggy with their parts prices.

R300 for an oil sprayer and R30 for an m6x20mm cap screw.
Insane.

I just find the parts prices totally irrelevant to what is advertised in America
and have a problem trying to reconcile the reason other than profiteering.

By way of example R9000 for a set of plug leads? surely that is wrong on so many levels.

example:

expansion tank for an e46 from BMW in USA $60
here the same part from the dealer is R 1400???

really you can expect parts to be a little more in SA because of shipping/volume/duties but more than double the price is excessive...

:whip:

That was a knife in the chest:rollsmile:

Seriously - they are absurd with their prices
