Can you guys stop quoting figures under 9l/100km.

I've seen 7.5 -8.0/100km on the open road (CPT - JHB) but the 320i is known for having the same, if not a more heavier thirst than it's 6 pot counterparts.

My intention, if all goes well, is to sell my E90 petrol this year/early next year for a 320d :thumbs:

2004 E46 330d 6spd 5.8l/100km driving down to margate. My dad took the car down with his lady, will see what he gets coming back up to pta. Expecting around 6.5l/100km.

The service and new fuel pump made quite a difference. Also considering the injector clean.

Oh yes and with 18" 8.5j wheels. 225 rubber right round.

E90 330d , downpipe and Xcede Map , Steptronic

I do 6.0L/100km in traffic driving and get 4.5l/100km on the open road.

A illustration of this consumption can be seen on my Jhb to Dbn trips , I usually fill up with Shell Vpower Diesel before I leave , stop at every garage on the way down and reach Dbn with my tank needle showing just below the 3/4 mark. The above is achieved with speedo-cruise set at 140km/h

I change oil in my car every 5000kms-7000kms with injector cleaner at every service.

Car makes decent power and consumption is just perfect.

8l/100km over the last 14950 kms, Mainly start stop drive pushing the car hard and to it limits.

5,9l/100km to durbs should of been lower but ended up following a E63,GTI n two other BMs

Interesting statistics

Anyone have stats for the E60 530d as well as the new 5 series 530d?

I drive an E60 530i petrol automatic and my fuel consumption averages 12l per 100km mostly in traffic (hardly any freeway).

On the freeway with cruise control I get 7.5 - 8 l per 100 km at about 125km/h

All figures quoted are from the OBC.

I got 5.8l per 100km on my 320d E46 2004 model 6 speed manual
This is mainly freeway driving, with 25% traffic

My 2003 E39 3l diesel auto give about 11 - 13km/l in mixed driving and on the open road, especially Cape Town - Gauteng around 15 -15,5km/l at a GPS 120 on the speedcontrol. Last time i went to Durbs got 16,5km/l measured from Bloem, and sitting in traffic other side of Pietermaritzburg for an hour with the car mostly at idle/first gear crawling forward. Was after decat and egr delete. Hope that when i replace the turbo to have it chipped/mapped for even better mileage.

I drove the 520d and it is a very nice car to drive. Does anyone on the forum own the new 520d or 530d?

E46 330d manual 5 speed...

From full tank to full tank I get 900km on average...

That is seriously impressive, you sir have a very special 330d and you should keep it till the wheels fall off! if your getting 900km mixed city an highway then my 330d is brocken :thumbdo:

I OBC currently says 7.7 but its a load of hogwash how these obc's have been designed as they are so easy to fool, go on high way for a 100km drive and reset it once you have hit 118kph and on cruise control and you will knock that consumption down to the very low 5s or 4s I have even gotten my 330d to read 3.2 for a period of about 35mins! then continue this type of driving for around 100km and you will get a nice false low reading on your obc for a long time which will very gradually go up.

But then you can go the opposite route LOL and this part makes me LOL hard....reset your OBC and put car in sports mode, turn off DSC etc and put foot flat.....drive like this for a couple mins and you should get some fantastic double digits, now watch how long it takes to get that reading down even after you drive like a human being for a long period of time, or you can wait till your stuck in heavy traffic and reset it and do that for a two hours or so that your stuck in traffic and watch how frikken long that reading stays high, the only way to lower it is to either fool it by resetting it on highway at a speed just under 120kph or go on a trip to durban or cape town it will eventually after around 4 hours of driving go down.


Plane and simple its a pos that couldnt give you the right reading if it tried. I reset my OBC before my last full up and have it reading 7.7, yet I only managed to get 656km to a full tank, yet when I put these digits into fuelly I get a reading of 9.3 hahahaha all this because I drove to alberton a couple times last weekend so the OBC got confused and almost died of enthusiasim!

1240km on a tank on open road was the best i got. from pta to kimberly and back at average speed of 120km/h. :rollsmile:

Thats ok, but on open road that is expected, I got 890km in my E39 525i petrol, I drove from my house to South coast shelly beach which is just over 700km and then drove around a bit more and the reserve came on at 890km.....BMW's are built to do well on the open road, the diff and gear ratios are geared toward good open road consumption which is primarily the reason why they suffer so badly in town driving conditions. The new Efficiant dinamics BMWs of the E90s and newer I would imagine have come to a happy medium with regards to open road driving and town driving as they get much better consumption than older BMW's of the same size engines.

At the end of the day getting 900km in a 2003 E46 330d with a 5 speed manual box is something that is EXTREAMLY impressive and thats why I say...keep that 330d till the wheels fall off cause BMW built that one differently to the rest either that or my 330d is caput! but when I look at fuelly and look at the averages of other 330d E46 they all getting what mine is getting...8.5 - 9.5l/100.

I forgot to ad that my E39 525i in town driving would get between 380 - 450km to a tank....and that was a big fekking tank of petrol! so to get 890km on open road just goes to show that these cars are built for the open road.
