Rant: Motorplan extension cost

Well it goes a little something like this.

We are one of the only countries in the world to offer a motorplan in the form of how we have motorplan.

We are also one of the countries in the world that drive our cars over 100,000 km. the rest of the world replaced the car at 40,000 or 60,000 cause the cars are cheap/disposable

The calculations are done based on the amount of field failures per model, and average price to repair.

They can easily determine, price the stuff that they know is going need to be done, brakes ect those are easy, next take the average failures of say a gearbox on your specific model, and if it has a high probility of failing, ad costs for replacement, and so it carries on.

And you do get those where things go really realy wrong, say on an M3, tthen they need to work in so that you could help pay for it too.

Hmmm...where do you get your information from?

You can get in Europe the same thing as the SA MP....

You are right with your assumption of how the prices are calculated, very easy for BMW to do that.

Hi All,

At the beginning of December BMW quoted me R30 000-00 to extend the motor plan on my wife's 2013 E84 X1 with another 20000km/12 months... :blueCry:

When I asked the Service Manager how they got to this figure he told me that they use a formula to calculate the amount, this is ridiculous (according to me) as I think they should have a fixed rate per model to extend the motor plan.

On my 2011 E90 320d the BMW sales man told me it will only cost me R7000-00 to extend my motor plan with another 10000km... :crazylaugh:

Does anybody know the motor plan extension formula?

Personally, if I didn't have the ordeal I did with BMWSA, I would have kept my 320D and drove it out of plan.
Yes if big items go, especially on the temperamental x35i's, it can be costly, so while you might score, you might not. Its a gamble I suppose.

What I would have done is put the money I was going to spend on extension in a savings account, and serviced/repaired the car at a reputable place, non BMW dealer, like Ross Duncan in Midrand (Garage 808 for the Capetonians).
You will be surprised how much cheaper an independant BMW expert can be compared to the BMW dealerships.

A ex-forum member and friend got a quote from BMW for his clutch replacement of R24 000+. He got the clutch, pressure plate, thrust bearing and a major service done at Ross Duncan for R15 000. That was 2 years ago, that specific car is still running faultlessly.

MP Renwals are rediculous.

To Extend for another 12 months and 80000km will cost you R161814 incl VAT.
That's a whole new car.
Mind you this is for an F30 320i. Not sure if it differs from the other models.

Check snipet below from BMW Owners Circle when I try to renew online.

That's crazy! This is something I'm keeping an eye on since I'm at about 65 000 km and will likely hit 100 000 km when the car is 4 years old.

Out of interest, are you actually considering this?

Nope, with the mileage I do, it not worth it.

I just did my e93 m3 paid R40075.00 for 1yr plan upto 120000km now

F10 M5. 22K to add 12 months (2018/12) and 110000km. I didn't think it was a bad deal so actually just did it. I probably wouldn't have hit that mileage by then anyway.

paid R23k to extend my 335 to 110000km...

the cost of motorplan is subjective...its alot more difficult to sell a beemer out of motorplan and watch how you get low balled... personally i did the renewal just for the sake of the dct transmission on my car

320i shouldnt give you many huge expenses, so a 3rd party motorplan may suffice. On a high performance model, I would stick with BMW MP as the 3rd party Motorplans seem to have a fairly low cap.
