Is the power steering fluid level ok?
Condition of the belts and tensioners? If the belt or tensioners are worn it could be causing them to slip from time to time which would cause you to lose power steering.
Condition of the pump?

Had the same issue not too long ago and when i brake hard there used to be a strange noise......turned out the power steering fluid was low, topped it up, working 100%, noise and all gone!!

Had a similar issue with my Jetta 3, only happened in wet weather though. Turned out to be a loose belt, combined with the wet weather it started slipping. Really scarry when going around a bend cause u would have no power steering and all of a sudden it would come right again.

Could also be the fins on the impeller that are warn... Maybe time for a rebuild and good flush of the system.

Hope its not too serious!
