Racing against Honda S2000

i have a e36 325 and have dragged two s2000's and i was very dissapointed in their performance.ive dragged faster civic's and ballad's.my house mate has a ballade and even him,who is a huge honda fan obviously, could'nt deny his dissapointment after dragging one.ive seen a few new civic type-R making over 150 kw on the dyno at the coast but on the road they struggle to get away from the old standard civic vtec, quite dissapointing for so much power.i guess the added weight of the new cars just slows them down.put a STANDARD s2000 on our dyno and you will NEVER see the 180 kw people are talking about.ive seen them make similar power to the type-r which is also a 2ltr vtec.just my R0.02

We're impressed with their performance because it's a 2L 16v motor making more kw than my 2.8L 24v 6cyl motor. It's an engineering marvel.

+1 ( more than my 3.0l 24v 6cyl motor to be precise :) )

I don't think it is surprising that you don't get to see the full power of the engine on the dyno, purely due to drivetrain losses (and altitude effects, depending on where the dyno is)

i didn't say its not an impressive machine.im probably a bigger honda fan than most, just finished a frankenstein conversion on a friends car.im just saying that for such amount of power its not showing it on the road.you say its got more power than your 330 but yet it cant embarras your 330,quite the opposite actually

Not that I have ever tried but, I have always thought my 330i would lose against a s2000.

Sank, up to 3rd gear you will be infront if you get a good pull away.
Then when you hit 4th, the S2000 will still be in 3rd, reving like only a vtec can,
that's where you will start falling behind, then from about 200km/h you might be able
to start catching up and pulling ahead again.
I drove a vtec, given it was only the 1600 (B16A6), but I did cams, chip, intake, well, everything.
2 problems with vtecs, they need to rev before there is any power, so below 5000rpm they lazy,
They also get allot of wheelspin off the line, the S2000 being rear wheel drive gets better traction.
also the weight difs between a S2000 and a 330i is big, honda is about 1250kg, 330i is 1500kg

This was exactly what I was thinking, over a shorter distance my 330i should have the edge due to more torque, but over longer distance the s2000 with it monster rev range should be better.

Not sure about 200km/h + I was thinking the s2000 would be better, as it is more aerodynamic, and the 330i willl probably stop at or around 250km/h where the s2000 can keep going (no limiter)

This is all just stuff in my head, the best test would be to put theses to up against each other, but someone else can do, not really my kind of thing.

Interesting topic guys, guess i will add my 2 cents worth there as well.

I've got a steptronic 2008 320d and i was at the robot on William Nicol, just past the Hyde park shopping centre and the shell garage bout a year back. Robot is uphill and i had a S2000 next to me (a guy and his chick). As always, my car is free of anything at all that weighs more that 100g and i had no passengers also and this guy was revving so i decided to see how far behind i would be.

Funnily enough, on take off with the car in sport mode i managed to kill him on 1st and 2nd and only on 3rd did he go through. Was pretty happy with that!

Good run, it's like I said, those vtec's are great engines but need to rev to get the power.
