Dare I say it......

MANUAL SWAP :p

Dare you speculate on a rate for such a venture LZ?
If Ettiene is willing to keep the car for another 2.5 years (until his next M5 arrives...) then swapping would be a good IF REASONABLY PRICED.

Prob not, dont even know if the boxes are available in SA from another series.

However, if Ettienie is willing to leave it in my yard with say a blank cheque, I am sure I can arrage something, but thats not going to happen is it :)

Actually just been looking on REALOEM now,

Seems they only came in the SMG version, meaning that the ECU does not have an option for the manual gearbox's, meaning a simple recoding wont help here, you will be able to do the mechanical swop no problem, but the ECU is going to have a heart attack, and even if you get get past the startup protection, its going to go into limp mode at any point.

Unless you can invent some PLC that can mimmic the inputs/outputs and really fool the ECU, its not impossible, but its going to be more then the 92k in terms of time, further you will then have to find a manual box with the right mounting offsets and stuff.. would be a really interesting project though still.

well the SMG already is a manual box, unless it is differnt to a e46 m3 SMG system. just a matter of replacing the actuator with a proper stick (massively over simplified :) )

Etienne, I am getting the quote for extension on mine today. I am sitting on 49,000km and asked for a two year extension so it should be cheaper.
What mileage are you on and what year model, would be interesting to compare.

I will let you know what my quote is, I am not buying kilometers and just two more years so am expecting something cheaper.

In terms of fitting a manual gearbox its pretty straight forward, you will need the gearbox from the states and the pedal box although fitment might be a issue with their cars being LHD. The ECU needs to be reflashed with the manual cars software, the SMG box works only by getting certain signals via the ECU although the ECU's are both the same with different software.
I would kick up a major stink in terms of the repair amounts they include in the Motorplan renewal. This is unheard off.
I have placed a deposit on the New M5 but its only expected to arrive in SA late next year.

there is manual software for it, u could use the pedals from another manual E60, they will all be the same. u could use a racing gearbox, doesn't have to be the same box from an M5. there are companies who make manual gearboxes for racecars with very high torque ratings..

yeah, but it will kinda be a waste doing that to a car on motorplan.. plus he wants to trade it on the new M5, so like, rather wait till its off motorplan or screwit, manual it and keep it and still get the new M5.

I got quoted R12,000 for a 1 year no mileage extension as I am sitting on 49,000km. I told them you got quoted R90k and they looked pretty shocked. Maybe get a quote from another dealership just out of interest sake.

If you don't mind me asking, at what dealership did you get your quote?

No gearbox change as yet for you George?

The car is on the second gearbox. The problem is not the gearbox being weak per se. Its actually the SMG electronics and pump that go moggy and select the wrong gear or two at the same time that messes the gearbox up. Most cars that have new SMG software and pump never seem to have problems with the box..
