R330 Carputer Project

So I don't know if any of you have heard of the wonderful Raspberry Pi computer, it basically is a small pcb (85.6 x 53.98 x 17mm) that is powered by USB and boots off a flash drive, etc... More info here. The best part is it only costs around R330. It is able to run a few versions of Linux and hopefully soon Android too. I have already registered and am waiting for my order to arrive :rollsmile:

here is a vid of it playing Quake 3 in full HD 1080p:
[video=youtube]

The idea is to use this as the computer part of the carputer and run a program like XBMC and eventually something like RideRunner. It has an HDMI output so ill have to get something like a 7" touch screen that has an HDMI input.

I will update this thread as the progress starts.

Car pc's (custom installed ones anyway) costed almost R15000 about 4 years ago. This type pc technology is a huge thing.

lol Psymon yeah its just a pc in the car, you can hook it up to the OBD of the car for some readings, use a custom satnav, and all the other entertainment goodies a pc can offer :p maybe even add a 3g card so you can stream internet radio :rollsmile:

I've been wanting to do this for a looooong time but as Hellas mentiond it has always been pretty expensive, but now the most expensive part will be the screen lol.

hahaha yes, hopefully their prices will drop sometime in the future, Android 4.0 would be so much fun in a car :joy:

Ok well since I haven't heard anything about the availability of the raspberry pi, I've recently stumbled upon this, a mini Android 4.0 PC for about R650. I think its super awesome!! Have any of you had experience with Android running on a normal pc, with things like usb devices and programs that'l be able to function with the OBD of the car?

heres a pic of the mini pc:

I am soooo clueless to this tech! :thinking:

hehehe :rollsmile: the main idea is to have a 7" touch screen just like on newer BMW's, but instead of running the BMW software (whatever that may be) it will be running most likely Android. So i can has gps navigation, full media player that will play anything, read OBD codes and data, use cameras on the car, you name it... There will also be USB ports somewhere so that u can plug in a flashdrive or whatever u wish and play the content on the carputer. When its complete it will look something like this:

sheesh sorry for the massive pic
