discussion PSA: Your E9x may qualify for a recall

Evening everyone

I was doing some digging around earlier today and found myself on the BMW SA Vehicle Dashboard. After entering my VIN, I noticed that there was an active recall out for my car.

Funny enough, I checked this page some time ago when I bought the car - no such advisory item. I called a branch today and asked if their systems reflect the same information or if the page was just buggy (their dashboard is far from perfect). They then confirmed that there is an active recall for the driver side airbag and should be booked in for replacement immediately at no charge to me.

Not sure if it will apply to everybody with an E9x but it's worth just giving it a quick look-over.

Had my E92 done in February at Bmw Midrand.

Applicable to all E9x, E8x and some F2x / F3x models.

The recall is related to the metal case at the rear of the driver airbag that splits into small shards once the airbag is deployed, resulting in serious injury to the driver.

Replacement takes no longer that 20 minutes provided that they have it in stock, so call the day ahead of your booking to ensure stock is available when you arrive.

Yup, confirmed for my e92. Going in on Tuesday for the replacement. Weird that they wouldn't say I must come in immediately given the safety nature of the part.

Waiting for someone to rock up at BMW with a WBC special only to be told there's no airbag in the steering wheel..
"Hi just want to check whether there is an active recall on my model."
"Of course sir. Did you purchase your vehicle at a BMW dealership?"
"No, I bought it from Monte Carlo."
"Oh. Uhm, please hold on for my manager. This is above my paygrade."

Awesome! I just checked my VIN now, and it says the same thing!
My car will be going to BMW for a service soon, and I will have them do this, too.
Would they pick this up automatically, or must I inform them?

Just got mine done on my e92. But when I got back in the car the coupé window function (slight drop when opening) wasn't working so they need to re-initialize it. So then they shove an indemnity in front of me stating that if their computer blows my FRM it's on my risk.

Refused to sign it as this was not communicated to me when I gave them the keys for the replacement and surely they should've known it would happen with the battery off. (Makes me wonder how they closed the door to begin with...)

Anyways, they proceeded on their own risk and sorted it and all seems fine now.

That is ridiculous. The coupe does not need a computer to initialise the windows after the battery is disconnected. It can be done at the window switch.

Where on earth do businesses get this idea that thet can make us sign away their responsibility and duty of care? They have so many of these “magic waivers” plastered on their buildings. Are we also able to crash into their inventory and say “sorry, your are SOL”.

Even if it was mentioned at that point, what option did you really have? Can drive with an armed airbag ready to kill you.

Which branch?
It was Paarl, but they got it done in the end - I think it's just them robotically following SOPs in the workshop and not applying their minds. They didn't give me any issue when I explained my point. So no negative feelings about the dealership - it's just how it is.

And I also thought it could just be done at the switches but I have seen posts on Bimmerpost where it didn't work and needed INPA or something similar to get it done. Having said that I doubt the tech at BMW knows about the manual method.

Well that was my point - the recall is due to a BMW issue from a product liability point of view. It's not my choice, and if I said no then they also make me sign something that says they warned me so if I end up with shrapnel in my eyes, too bad.

Like I said - they backed off when they listened to me. They were just mindlessly applying a SOP.

Got mine sorted today at BMW East Rand. No issues at all. Didn't appreciate that they touched my mirrors, seat position, steering position AND radio station but job done.

So was I wondering...
What happens to the guys that have changed their steering from the usual ugly to the MSport or Individual?

Will BMW swap out the MSport bag?

I stand to be corrected but this particular recall for most of the e9x/e8x platforms predominantly use only that one style of airbag... Not sure what the suv's used but the sedans and coupes generally used the airbag pictured above.

No, because the spec sheet for the VIN won't have the M Sport steering wheel as an option.

Just went to Bmw Umhlanga to make the booking and was told NO.
The vehicles are a 2010 320D E90 LCI and 2010 530D F10.

They are refusing based on the following reasons

1. Both vehicles (E90 and F10) are 15 years old and there's no service history with the dealer. But one has full service history except for the last service which I did privately. When I mentioned this they brought up point 2. Was also told every time they service a vehicle the FRM gets updated.

2. The FRM. If it blows they do not want to take responsibility.

Their advice was that I take it up with BMW South Africa. Will take up the matter and report back.
