Power Steering Noise

Hello Everyone,

Yesterday when Driving I started hearing and feeling a Vibration. I pulled over to get a bite to eat then went back out to the car.

After starting the Car. The Noise was gone.

Then today after starting the car and driving down my drive way which happens to be a pretty good size hill. I heard the noise again. Right away I went back and took my other car out instead.

When I got home I decided to check the Power Steering Fluid (ATF) and it was almost empty but did have some in there. Let me point out that when it was making noise the steering felt fine. So I think I have a bad leak or pump.

My question is does the pump make noise when its not getting the right amount of fluid? Is it possible that I just have a hose leak or is it for sure the pump since its making noises?

Thank You

Welcome to the forum! Please tell us a little more about your car, model etc. And we do love pics!

If the power steering is leaking, you should see traces of it on your garage floor or driveway. Have you topped up with ATF fluid, if so has this happened again?

Welcome
The pump on e30/e36 etc will make a noise if fluid is lost . I expect similar results on later models . Are you a spanner swinger ? time to get your hands dirty . Fill up system , run engine and turn steering wheel from lock to lock to get air out . Clean where you can then look for leaks , maybe cardboard under car overnight . Good luck .

Topped it off today and drove it down the street. Then drove it up on ramps and took a look. It looks like where the hose connects to the reservoir is where its leaking. So getting new Hoses and or Claps should fix it.

FYI. I have a 1995 E36 BMW 325i

Thank You

Welcome to the forum, also check your belt and also whether one of the idler bearings did not perhaps seize, it will then cause a vibration as the belt runs over it.
