Power Lag

Hi guys

My '04 318i (N46 motor) has a this funny power lag problem. It used to only happen on a cold start, the car would choke, even with the accelerator flat down.

Now it even happens when the engine is at normal operating temperature. Sometimes when I take off from stand still, the car doesn't rev as freely and its like its in limp mode. Then out of nowhere there's a burst of power...

It also makes this funny noise, like there's an air leak, it sounds turbocharged. The noise isn't there at idle, but as the revs climb it gets louder...

P.S. The dash is completely clean, no warning lights.

Any Ideas...?

I have the same sound problem... no loss of power, infact, since the sound appeared, I actually have a lot more power... its almost as if someone supercharged my car... hmmm :fence look:

But seriously, its definitely a problem with your air/fuel timing. MAF sensor could be going wrong. I would look into getting the diagnostics done. That will definitely give you an accurate description into what is happening.

i also "had" the same problem, the no-power and suddenly there is power issue and my car also had a misfire at idle speed.

i took my car to mech last week friday, he said i need a new MAF. he disconnected the maf and the car drove better for a while.

the next morning my car was only firing on 3 cylinders. turns out one of my ignition coils was dead.

I don't have a misfire or anything, at idle, the car sounds healthy as ever. Its when I'm driving it, that theres that "turbocharged" sound.

How much does a MAF cost?
And ignition coils?

Could just be that it's sucking in air where it shouldn't. You could feel around the intake to try and find the leak. I'm no expert though. Have never had such an issue either.

maf at stealers = R5000, goldwagon = R1500
per coil at stealers = R800 goldwagon = R 400

They are so deserving of the "STEALER" title, my goodness, WTF?

I got a MAF from Bosch (dieselelectric) for my 318i for about R1500.. Cant remember exactly.. Got new plugs at the same time while I was there & this stopped the no power under 2000 & then surging of power

The MAF diagnosis seems to fit my symptoms. The car cut out while taking off from a robot on Saturday afternoon.

I've also noticed that my fuel consumption is quite erratic. Sometimes I average 8.2 l/100km and other times doing the trip, I average around 9 l/100km.
Does that still point to the MAF?

The cheap solution to all... Buy some engine cleaner and remove both Vanos solenoids and clean them, try to suBmerge on the cleaner for about 10 min, install it again and your car become like new... Even fits the fuel consumption
Good luck guys
