potentially "downgrading", what alternates would make me happy :)

I am considering getting rid of the 4pipe, as I want to buy a house. its sort of reaching that time where I feel I need to do this now or it is never going to happen :)

obvs I need a new car, and am not really keen to leave the bmw stable (I am open to suggestions though)

how am I going to go from that power to less and be happy :)

I was thinking a e39 540 could be quite fun, but am kind of put off by the auto.

help me :dunno:

yea the auto problem is annoying, although those steptronic boxes are not bad at all, but I agree, manuals are far more fun

WHat ya got in the 4 pipe, manual or SMG ?

E39 M5... ? You can pick em up for 140k nowadays.

currently manual

m5 would be nice, but I am still gonna end up having to pay like 3K a month for that, want to spend a bit less :)

E46 330i? It is quite a performance drop, but decent bang for the bucks.

How about E46 330d. If u don't mind getting one without a sports pack, they are quite reasonable nowadays ... and not such a huge downgrade as you might think ...

+1 MSM.

Do not underestimate the diesels, specially the 330d. You can pick them up in a E46 shape for like next to nothing, and are a lot easier to find in manual.

Chip, and you will have more torque then what you will know what to do with :)

never thought about a diesel :)

maybe I should go do a testdrive to see how it feels

Be careful ... all that torque may become addictive :mmm: and leave your ///M feeling like it needs more :)

Hmmm, I would feel terribly conflicted bru. You have one thing right, how do you drive anything with less power. You get used to a certain standard. If it was for anything else other than the purchase of a house, I would have said NO dude, NO!

Not even if your girlfriend fell pregnant with 6 laaties!! But at least you have your head screwed on right, a house is by far a better investment! I'd say stick to the e46 shape, but nothing less than 325!

Your best bang for buck on the market today is the E39 540i!

You get a very modern hi-tech chassis, a V8 and 220 Kw for under 50 grand if you shop around.

I also hate automatics, but the E39 steptronic transmission is one of the sweetest I have ever driven, not lazy at all, doesn't bother me in the least it's not a manual.

We will definitly go for a drive next time we meet up:)

Under 175000 Km is what to look for, though I've driven a few with 250K and they are still fine.

There's three choices of these 540i's all with pro's and cons 95-97/98-2000/ 2000 and up

The 95-97 pre-vanos cars are my preference, they are loaded with features and a bit more reliable than the later stuff. Radiator expansion tank bottles tend to crack and leak, the old ones are black top and clear bottle, the replacement is all black and don't break anymore. Very few hasles with these cars, problems are limited to radiators and suspension component wear. Expect to pay 30 - 75K

After 98 they added vanos, power went up a tiny bit, also some extra head airbags reliability went down. Post 98 cars have a water cooled alernator that repeatedly fails (up to 12K to fix) and the inside door handles changed from chromed steel to chromed plastic and break, front PDC was an option, and some features were not standard anymore. The two speed electric fan was ditched and a variable speed electric radiator fan was added which has a tendancy to catch fire and burn the car. On the post 98 cars the top new style clip on radiator hose likes to break off the radiator as well. After 98 the 540 was a bit pricy, I havn't seen many of them around. Expect to pay 55 - 105K

2000 came the facelift, LED tail lights color coding all around and angel eyes, more standard features stripped off and became optional, most 2000 and up cars are quite basic due to cost of options, Xenon headlights were quite common as an option, most have trim options apart from the wood, and many have satnav, many of the relaibility issues were sorted by now. Most of the post 2000 540i's have the factory option Mtech kit and various nice wheels, havn't seen too many standard ones.Expect to pay 100 - 135K

When you finally go hunting for one, give us a shout I'll tag along I know the E39 well and what to look out for.

Kabal ... having been in this position myself, this is the advice I would offer.

Accept the fact that nothing that you intend replacing the car with will replace the joy and excitement of your ///M and every time you go and test drive one of the options, do not go with the ///M as it will leave you more disappointed and you will notice the performance difference more acutely.

A buddy of mine has a 540iM and it would most likely be the best option for you ... having had a E46 330i and a Golf GTiR post the ///M3, let me tell you that nothing is ever going to feel right (but the manual 540 does come close).

That is why I opted for the E36 328i Individual as it is something I can keep once I can acquire an E46 ///M once more :)

Good luck as this is not going to be easy.
