Potential 1st time BMW buyer needs guidance

Hi

I am a potential first time BMW buyer.

I am interested in buying a second hand BMW 320i in the 2013-2014 year range with approx 100000km. in the R150k - R180k price range

Why are there so many available? And what do I look out for when wanting to buy second hand BMW?

This particular one caught my eye:

Welcome to the forum.
99% of forum members will advise you to rather get the 320d - even a higher mileage one would be better buy than a 320i.
A quick search on this forum will reveal a lot of threads where the 320d is regarded as the better buy.
Similarly, the issues on the early F30 320i are well documented here too.

This motor needs some timing chain "guidance" too. 

Buying it will only spoil your first time BMW experience.

That being said, if you do end up buying it then replace oil pump, chain, guides, gaskets and bearings for peace of mind.

You'll probably want to buy this N20 Timing Tool as well.

There are a lot of them for sale because drivers are seeking a bit more thrill from the right pedal. Lol.
It is a popular entry level model but you'll soon find yourself wanting.

You could pick up a similar milage, very clean example E8X or E9X with an N52 (3.0L) motor and that would be more rewarding imo. Or even a turbo model if you like maintenance.

Start with checking the VIN with BMW to see what its service history was like, with them at least, and also if there were any comments about repairs. Then go have a test drive, ask the dealer if there is another similar example E or F chassis you could drive to compare.
