Poor fuel consumption

What is the distance you travel? And average speed? I commute 1.8km to work and heavy on fuel no matter what I drive. Currently doing just below 6km/l in a 530d(which is the best I've gotten with any car). Petrol cars overfuel heavily(almost double) until it is warmed up, so that might also factor in.

Currently i don't have to commute to work ( Working at home rocks:pimp: )

I average between 20 - 30km a day, Average speed 70ish
Its a small town so unless you driving around to a few places i suppose most trips will take roughly 15min to destination.

I suppose if it is just heavy on fuel then i'll deal with it, Just feels unfair that my vr6 and dads 328i had less consumption in the same town

That is heavy heavy heavy consumption, as far as I know the 328i is actually very good on consumption especially when compared to a 325i reason being is that it has allot of low down torque so you dont need to push the pedal as hard to get speed which obviously results in better consumption.

My E36 328i used to average 450 - 500km in town traffic if I was driving nicely, if I put my foot down she drank.

My 325i was not as good I had to really drive her gently to get 450km in town traffic but she was able to do it.

It wouldnt be something like an O2 sensor would it or the MAF? how is the power are you having any flat spots or funny idles and how is the general power delivery does it feel right to you or a bit sluggish? check if the car is smoking, rev it up to 4000rpm then let go and then rev to 6000rpm and see if a big puff of black or white/grey smoke comes out?

If black smoke comes out then it could be running too rich.

Hope that helps

lets see, first start in the morning the ldle is abit all over the place but never going above 2000rpm, It does change very slightly when i depress the clutch

Haven't noticed any flat spots or smoking but will rev it tomorrow once its warmed up properly

The power feels decent, i do somehow feel that its slightly less than my dads ex e36 328i though

I'll come back to you about the smoking

@ 444YYY, i smelt for petrol but didn't smell any

lambada sensor... lol
Its on the exhaust system, close to the catalytic converter. Look for a probe like thing sticking out in the exhaust system. Should be close to the front of the car....

If your having flat spots and the power isnt right then I have a feeling an O2 sensor or MAF is not right, but check that Lambada sensor out, could be a number of things causing this problem.

Fuel problems like this are often hard to correct easily, have you perhaps taken your car to a bmw dealership and put it on the computer to see if the computer maybe picks up any error codes? if a sensor is not right or broken then the computer will pick it up straight away. if I were you I would first do that rather than sit there messing with tons of probable causes when the answer could be right there on the computer :) Just a suggestion.

That sounds like a lazy way of getting it sorted . . . I LIKE IT :lmoa:

I think i should get the codes read and if nothing comes up then just get them to check all the things that everyone has suggested

as long as it can pick up fault codes then it should pick up any faulty sensors in the car, I have a feeling the O2 or MAF is not in great shape this would be the cause of your flat spot, I had a problem with my MAF on my 328i and it caused me a bit of a power loss and crazy fuel consumption, so I would definately have a look into that.

Update :

Well kinda . . . well i happened to be in the area by a mechanic so i popped in and asked if he can scan it quick, sure scanned it but alas no codes came up :banghead:

So I'll be taking back to him sometime next week to leave it there for the day so they can look through it because he also agrees that i should be getting way more out of a tank. I'll report back as soon as I've taken it in.

On a side note i noticed when I'm driving 60kph in 5th the fuel consumption read out is all over the show 3.5l/100 5.5l/100 4.2l/100 and so on but in that vicinity.
