PM System

Guys when are fixing the PM system? Its probably quicker to download a movie using dial up internet than it is to send a PM. This is extremely annoying.:thumbdo:

It's not like it's a new problem, it's been years of false hope and empty promises from staff about this major issue, time to get off your arse and fix it!

Apologies for devoting some of our free time to this platform, and that too, for no reward other than wanting to keep this platform running :ty:

It would appear that it's more a db and data (volume) related issue (this is my suspicion). Using a pre-built/out-of-the-box GUI doesn't help dissect and resolve the issue either.

The DB is far too large to download and restore locally to check out the indexes and to do basic SQL maintenance on it (it's MySQL and not SQL Server out of interest sake). However indexes can be rebuilt using the GUI (again, not a fan, as I can't see what exactly is being done).

@chefdj we need to chat about upgrading the platform (firstly) and then getting a backup of the db from the hosting company.

No test environment :blueCry:

I haven't actually done any checking on my side, but is the forum not running on a dedi?

I'm not sure if I'd 100% agree on it being a db issue as search, viewing, and historical data loads quite well. I haven't noticed anything on the client side that would suggest this.

Maybe it the implementation of the pm system's tables that could be dB related?

I'm not criticizing in the slightest. Sure the pms intermittentcy is annoying at times but I am very happy with the forum.

I'm offering my time and skill set if admins are struggling with workload or need help.

Have you guys considered truncating/deleting pm's that are more then say 5yrs old?

It's a pm, not an email or a document that needs to be stored indefinitely on the database. I am sure just freeing up this space will help the forum be more responsive and faster

I've been told that it is a dedicated server. I know that temporary tables cause issues on certain VMs but we're going to rule this one out from here as it is just speculation - in this instance - at least.

I suspect it being a DB issue as the site and DB have never been touched - since inception. Naturally, the only thing that has changed is the data. This wasn't an issue from day 1. So my guess is volume of data, indexes, fragmentation.. Usual data gremlins.

Having that said; when mentioning a user (ie @cratix ) the PM is sent out immediately. Probably using a different method/controller/POST or something. Which again - shouldn't be related to the DB but myBB is relatively old and community based - I'm going to use dev tools and and see where it hangs under the network tab and try trace it from there. Not having source code makes it a tad bit difficult. I wouldn't be surprised if I found some inline SQL as well...

PS the remainder of the forum does hang at times - however this is a hosting issue and not an application issue.

Thanks for offering to help, this has earned you a rep point, and we're always open to help from people that are willing to assist and lend us some time (and not steal credentials LOL)

For now - we will be clearing all PMs, in an attempt to resolve or - at least - eliminate this being the issue.

Chef and I will be in contact with you soon :ty:

This has been in the talks for a while but was never acted upon. Now that we have Zach's approval - it is scheduled for tonight.

Its not like I give a f*** about your stupid rep system anyway so dont stress about it.
Fix the forum instead of wasting time on sending useless reps to someone who doesnt care for them, just a thought.
