Yep, I stripped the old coating the hard way, lots of elbow grease and even sandpaper (start with 120 or 200, finish with 400 grit).
The old coating was completely worn away in some places, easily removed by hand, yet in other places on the same part it stuck like shit to a blanket.
I sanded the whole part with 400 paper to prepare the surface for the Plastidip. What you see in the pic is about 4 coats.

My silly view on the plasti dip..
It sticks to just about anything that you spray it onto.
I did my grilles on the car over the chrome, no sanding or anything required.
And if you don't like it you simply peel it off and have the chrome back. no damage done to it at all.
this stuff lasts as i did this and every weekend clean the car with my katcher etc, wash over it and it hasn't come off so it's very durable.
So my 2cents says that you don't need to sand or anything :thumbs:

I sanded the parts to get an even finish on the areas where the old coating remained stuck. Also, in my experience the new coating sticks better if the surface is prepped & cleaned properly.
@PrevanP: the writeup will depend on which car you're working on?
I did the steering wheel cover and the window switches on my wife's X3. The window switches just popped out and disassembled by levering with a small screwdriver, the steering wheel cover is removed by unscrewing from the back of the steering wheel using a T-20 torx bit and gently levering it over the airbag module. I did not remove the airbag module as it was not necessary and I did not know how to anyway. The multifunction switches on the steering wheel cover can be unscrewed with the same T-20 bit once the cover is off the steering wheel.
