Performance air filters. Do they work?

Hi guys. Was wondering if performance air filters actually make any difference. Im not talking about a full induction kit, just the replacing the existing paper one with say a K & N or BMC. Are there any dyno figures to back them up? Is the MP affected in any way? The internet seems to show mixed opinions on these. Thanks

Gains are marginal, borderline placebo effect. (talking about diesel engines).

Not worth it, rather buy OEM and sleep tight at night knowing that your filter is doing a proper job.

there was an article in the speed and sound magazine donkeys years back :biglol:
They actually tested all the brands of filters from the cheapest to the most expensive brands
They had the car to the dyno
It was like 1-2 kw gain between them , some even loosening power

No gains maybe a slight alteration in sound, but as for gains the difference in power of 1-2kw as Dino mentioned could just be as result of other factors, heat, fuel, car engine temps etc

Waste of money - I would also rather buy new filters at every service interval then washing an re-using the "Re-usable" K&N, BMC, etc.

I will just add this here, on the e46 all the cars from the m43 engined 318i all the way up to the M3 use the same paper filter element, how restrictive could it be?
