Gentlemen, you have the idea going there.

I would support it all, but in this coutry sooo much has to happen before that can be done. Mainly with regards to pedestrians crossing at stupid places and bad drivers.

My only stretch where I stay that I can put a little bit of foot is the lower part of the M5, it's an 80 zone (or 70...i forget). Thing is though, I turn in, and just put a little bit of 'freedom force' on my long pedal, and then there's always some random, semi stoned looking idiot crossing the road as frikkin slowly as he posibly can, and nowhere near the pedestrian crossing sections...and don't think he waits for a car to pass before he proceeds.

And in the odd event that this doesn't happen, there's always some drunk...or semi-stoned...or just really slow idiot in a broken piece of sh!t car that just...sloooowly decides to drift into my lane while he's doing 20kph and I'm doing...well...80kph:mmm:

Nearly hit a pedestrian shmuck the other night who was clearly very aware of his safety...he was keeping his eye on the road the whole time...just in the wrong direction.:hammerhead:

So there needs to be a way to seperate the good from the bad, and that has chaotic infrastructural implications.

And it would have to start at the top...which we all frankly know won't happen. Face it, crime and accidents mean money for the fatcats.

taxi's already go 160 down hill
the speed limit would not apply to buses, taxis or trucks

M5? im not saying you can go 160 anywhere its 140... and only on some national high ways the idea would be to make long trips a little shorter...if you happen to use the N3 to get to work well then good for you...

They already issue permits to speed in SA.

The road between Springbok and Poffadder (or there around) is actually approved for highspeed driving. Big yellow signs saying that you can speed if you have a permit... They issue permits to manufacturers for fast and hot vehicle testing.

Did you not know that?:mmm:

Actually its the perfect road to speed, its a good surface, towns are off the mainroad, I have never seen a pedestrian and its all big commercial farms so fences are in good nik.

Only problem is that it is only for the manufacturers.
My father used to be one of the testers down there like almost 6 months out of the year

I remember seeing a photo of a Veyron with one of these "big yellow signs" on it being tested along this stretch. So I doubt this is something that the average 'joe' can attain. Would be great if it was possible to have a speed pass available, but like already said, not in this country and not with the way things are right now. There are too many hazards on the roads, and in most cases the roads themselves aren't up to scratch for this in terms of safety. And then let's say you do have a "drive as fast as you want" pass and you're blasting along a multi-lane road that's mostly flat and straight - you are still going to have other normal road users on the same road who are stupid, inconsiderate and don't use their mirrors. Unless the overall standard of road users improves dramatically in terms of skill, experience, road manners and awareness of safety, not to mention condition of vehicles, this will never be possible here! And what about insurance??

LOL about the cows crossing the pedestrian bridges on the N2 - but that reminds me of something that happened in the mid to late '90s while driving along the N2 into Cape Town. It was around 10 pm on a Sunday night and my dad was driving along the N2 just outside Somerset West and fortunately he was in the right lane. Next thing he sees an Opel Astra cart wheeling over the bushes on the right side of the road and landing in front of him in the left lane. Apparently he saw how the driver was flung out of the car and how the car luckily bounced over him rather than crushing him. Reason for the accident: the guy was driving towards Somerset West and all of a sudden a black cow walked onto the road in front of him! Hit the cow and the car was flung into the air!
