Pay-to-speed' considered in US

A Nevada State mayoral candidate has wooed car-owning voters by proposing a 'speed pass' system that will essentially allow drivers to speed for a fee.

Eugene DiSimone reckons the scheme could raise up to $4m (£2.6m) per day in revenue for state coffers.

DiSimone's proposal involves drivers paying an initial $48 (£31) fee to have their car safety checked and registered to the scheme. Thereafter they will pay $25 (£16) for a 24-hour pass to drive at speeds of up to 90mph on certain roads.

Approved cars are placed on a register so that if an officer catches them speeding, they're simply let go. A transponder given to each driver can be activated whenever the fee is paid via the internet or a phone call, allowing time-limited speeding.

DiSimone is a rank underdog to make office in the next Nevada State elections, but his plan has garnered instant support from motorists.

Talking on Seattle-based KIRO radio, DiSimone defended the proposal, saying that speed and accident rates are not inexorably linked.

He said: "the per capita highway accidents in the '60s and '70s when there were no speed limits is not significantly different to the per capita highway accidents today. It has nothing to do with speed limits."

Of course, the plan has drawn critics from those who believe it will lead to an increase in accident rates. A representative from the state of Washington claimed that "the wide variety of traffic speed in the traffic flow and drivers' abilities to make a decision at a high speed potentially would result in more speed-related accidents."

what do you think?

I think they should not bring it here, cause we have stupid people on our roads.

I think it will work in america, and I KNOW it will work in europe ..

Look at the logic.

If you have a double lane highway in the middle of nowhere with no side roads crossing it, why not make it an Autobahn?

Or in SA a "Sit Voet Bahn" or a "Bliksembahn"

Pity the problem in SA is the pedestrians and animals.... When I first arrived in Capetown in 93 the Government had just spent X Million building pedestrian bridges over the N2 to stop all the fatalities from pedestrians running across the N2.

In 94 the pedestrians were still being killed because they insisted on running across the N2 instead of using the "long way" bridge and the cows were using the bridges instead.

Go figure.......

Autobahn?
Between Springbok and Steinkopf....

No, that road is 100 and I stick to it since it's a hotspot for the cherry&berry brigade and too many daily commuters during the week and too many intoxicated commuters during the weekend...

But from Stein to the border... ooooh :)
And then again any other direction from home :)

Well, my ideal cruising speed is 140km/h on the highway anyway.

Thats highest gear, foot barely on the accelerator, but you know what, my car is physically able for me to drive it at that speed anyway. For me to do 120, I have to keep on tapping the brakes, and I forget sometimes.

I try and do the speedlimit, and i often get it right, but what is wrong with 140 in a capable car.

For this, I am prepared to undergo a driver assesment, as well as have my vehicle certified, and willing to pay the money for this, as I feel pefectly safe at that speeds, and pose no danger to my fellow road users. Last insurance claim for an accident was in 99.

However, as well illustrated, most road users in this country are idiots behind the wheel, and should be shot on sight..

So I agree, not in SA

One thing that congregates ALL human beings irrespective of age, race, sex or religion is that deep down we all feel that we are above average drivers... :)

i think they are missing something here the driver should have to pass an advanced driving test...
their normal speed limit ins 75 mph (120 kph)so 90mph (144 kph) is not that fast?
hell there are alot of people here that travel 140kph all the time but they only have to pay if they get caught...
so i dont really see how doing something like this will change road safety in SA?
yes if it were an unlimited speed or something like 160kph i could see the problem...

if i were to take power :)

i would implement this:

the car would have to be on an approved list and pass inspection every 12 months
the driver would have to pass an approved advanced driving test
any area of high way that has a high accident rate would not fall under the new speed limit

I agree 100%.
In fact, i think that an advanced driving test sould be part of getting your licence. No advanced driving, no licence and you should undergo the test again when you licence expires. The only current reason for licences to expire is to make money.
That sould get rid of most of the incompetent idiot drivers

All these ideas are pretty good, the one big problem still remains: The implementation, the licencing test is supposed to at least weed out the most incompetent drivers, and see how well that has worked so far.
Not that I am hating on your idea of anything, I fully agree that advanced driver training should be a part of the licencing test.

I just got this scary thought, can you see all the taxi's driving around @ 160 km/h, or everyone doing 160 and some pillock driving @ 60 in the fast lane! (Not all cars have the stopping power)
