Ex-inmates will again take centre stage in a new Brandhouse anti-drunk-driving campaign which was launched yesterday.
The advertising company, known for its controversial “Pappa wag vir jou†(Daddy’s waiting for you) advert, will now use former inmates to dramatise the possible consequences of landing up in the back of a police van after being caught driving while under the influence.
In some of the other adverts, ex-inmates are also shown in the driver’s seat.
The Advertising Standards Authority has previously received several complaints relating to the “Pappa wag vir jou†ads, particularly for the way inmates were stereotyped. Several people complained about the radio and TV adverts at the time, which sought to deter drunk-driving during the festive season by warning male motorists that if arrested, they faced the prospect of being raped in prison.
The complaints were, however, dismissed.
In the new TV campaign, “Who’s driving you home tonight?†the minute-long advert suggests that a drunk driver could end up sharing the back of a dark van with “unsavoury†characters.
Responsible Drinking Campaign manager Heather Noble said three of the ex-convicts in the previous adverts had expressed interest in being involved in the next campaign after they had experienced first-hand what it was like to be behind bars.
“‘Pappa wag vir jou’ was very successful and now it is time for the next chapter,†she said. “Our strategy is not simply about raising awareness, but rather about changing consumer behaviour…
“People have a choice in terms of who will take you home after you have been drinking. But if you make the wrong choice and choose to drink and drive, the reality is there could be very real and dangerous consequences, which can impact on the rest of your life.â€
Leading up to the TV launch, various previews were showcased at popular night spots around Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. These included a taxi parked next to a tow truck, with the banner “Who’s driving you home tonight?â€
imp:
So guys... "Pappa wag vir jou, saam met Bubba!!"
