302d tractor sound

One day, not so long ago, I was driving around in my 2002 E46 320d. Motor purring as usual. Suddenly the motor sounded like a tractor and I pulled into the nearest Supa quick to fix my exhaust. Got ready to pay for the damage when the “Exhaust Engineer” came out from under the car and said “there is nothing wrong with your exhaust sir, in fact it is in excellent condition”.
Confused, I went to BMW to book my 320d in for repairs. The Technicians was so busy that they did not have time to attend to my emergency so I went home and started striping. When I removed the covers, my whole engine bay was full of diesel soot. Some of my wiring was burnt as well.
Cause of the tractor sound: My EGR packed up and broke off at the connection with the pipe going to the exhaust/turbo. So all the recirculation exhaust gases were blown into the engine bay and that’s where the sound came from.
I saved a bit by doing the fault location and installation myself.
